As the air starts to get colder and the extra sweater layers pile on, all the basic girls crawl out of their Netflix induced hibernation. As they put on their classic Uggs to go outside, they have no shame. Because there is no shame in being the poster child for the basic girl. But in order to be considered basic, there are a few necessities that every girl must rock with pride:
1. Uggs
This item is so basic it basically wrote itself. The ever stylish and fur covered boot is not only warm, but so comfortable you want to wear them around the house. So they may be the basic girl’s go to footwear, but the functionality of Uggs makes it worth all the scrutiny.
2. The North Face Jacket
Whether it’s the classic black vest or the colorful fuzzy jacket, every basic girl owns at least one. This brand originally got its start as outdoor and athletic brand built for warmth and comfort. Somewhere along the way, basic girls jumped on the wagon. But can you blame them? These jackets are made to keep you warm and be comfortable while you move. You can’t get that with just any jacket you buy at a department store. Pair this with a pair of Uggs and you are warm enough to take on any harsh fall or winter weather you are bound to encounter.
3. The Picture Of Your Feet In The leaves
The ultimate basic girl instagram phenomenon in the fall. The classic autumn colors vibrating off your fashionable brown boots is just a picture perfect moment made for your followers to see. It also gives you the time to use that favorite caption you’ve been waiting to use. This picture may seem overwhelmingly basic, but it is always guaranteed to get a lot of “likes”. So who really is the winner here?
4. The “Because…” Instragram Caption
While we are on the subject of instagram caption I will bring up every basic girl’s favorite caption. Putting “because” in front of a saying about the picture. “Because I really miss these girls.” “Because it’s Sunday so here’s a selfie.” “Because I wish it was still summer.” All these justified photos are always followed with the Instagramer’s emoji of choice. As ridiculous as this trend is (because who really has to justify any of their posts? We all know that one person who posts seventeen pictures in a row without any justification whatsoever) every basic girl still does it. It’s an instant catchy caption and the excuse to post your favorite picture of you and your bestie at the lake last summer.
5. Starbucks
Starbucks coffee, Starbucks tea, Starbucks cakepop, Starbucks breakfast; put Starbucks in front of any word and a basic girl will love it. The overly priced products can be bought at many other places, but that little green lady on the cup makes it all worth it. In all fairness, Starbucks does have some pretty neat drinks, but don’t get any basic girl started on the greatness that is pumpkin spice.
6. Hard Cider
Hard Cider is technically beer. But for a basic girl, hard cider is THE beer. It’s a little fruity with a splash of cinnamon. So while the frats are super stoked to throw a raging kegger, you will not see a basic girl excited about getting that cup because “I mean beer is okay but I’m totally more into Angry Orchid”. But this same basic girl will probably fall into the trap and drink keg beer anyway because a basic girl can’t turn down a good party either.
7 and 8. Looking Really Nice For Class/Looking Homeless For Class
There is not in between. The basic girl is either wearing her perfectly researched Pinterest outfit or the sweatshirt she fell asleep in last night. Every basic girl has her favorite chunky scarf to throw on over an oversized sweater that matches her cute knit socks that peek out of the top of her boots. But when she’s not feeling the sweater, she has her favorite sweatshirt that is probably a size or two too large that she can wear with a pair of chucks to compensate for the birds nest that rests on her head.
9. Pinterest
Pinterest is the bible for basic girls. It can teach you everything from how to turn a hanger into wall décor to a million fun mason jar crafts, so what’s not to love? A basic girl’s pinterest will consist of a board on clothes, travel ideas, their wedding, healthy food, desserts, and quotes (all with clever titles). Every basic girl has made one Halloween costume from a pinterest idea or has their entire wedding planned out. It’s the perfect hobby to waste time and plan your future, so is that even considered procrastination?
10. Small Black Ink Tattoos
On their wrist, ribcage, or foot, the basic girl loves to place a cursive word or little animal or shape tattoo. They might have the outline of a sun on their side or a saying dancing up the side of their foot; either way it is never colored or big enough to be considered a major tattoo. The more common these tattoos become, the more creative the basics get with their design. These tattoos easily become a topic for girls to bond over. Whether the tattoo is a simple picture that is cutesy or a word that has a greater meaning to the girl, a little tattoo is something a basic girl gets in their early college years and is in complete love with.
There is actually no end to the list of things that qualify a girl as basic. Whether you occasionally check off one thing on this list or you rock it all day, every day, be basic and be proud.
