10 Things That Need To Stay In 2016

Bon Voyage 2016.

Last year was a whirlwind of a year, to say the least. Many trends came about that made their name in 2016 and will be remembered when were forty with children who ask us about these crazy trends we took part in. The ten things I am about to mention need to start digging their graves because they are as dead as 2016 is to us.

1. Chokers

If you want to look like a dog, I recommend you get yourself a chocker. Better yet, get yourself a shock collar. It may knock some sense into you because this trend is horrid.

2. Eyelash Extensions

Like any other girl, I love wearing fake eyelashes for events such as weddings, college sorority/fraternity formals, and other gatherings. However, having “spiders” on your eyes for everyday affairs is simply ridiculous. When it cost upwards of $100 to have these false lashes applied and knowing they only lasts for a few weeks, your bank account needs to be put in check.

3. Pokémon Go

One thing I was never attracted to in 2016 was Pokémon Go. The craze only lasted for a few months but is still mentioned today. I think the game needs to make its final exit as 2017 approaches.

4. Mannequin challenge

While standing frozen and having someone record you alongside your friends is somehow seen as trendy, the Mannequin challenge killed Black Beatles.

5. Harambe, RIP

Our beloved friend and favorite Gorilla might as well have dug a grave for Donkey Kong. While we will never forget Harambe, the absolute best way to honor his is to party on in his memory and let him RIP.

6. Dabbing

I think it is safe to say that dabbing has found its way to the bottom of the trend pile. The act of dabbing needs to end. It is no longer endearing.

7. Artsy Food Pictures

Food is great in all, but I am tired of my Instagram being riddled with pretty salads and desserts. One food picture once in a while is lovely, but an Instagram account full of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and your late night taco bell is not necessary. We get it, you are a food connoisseur.

8. Velvet/suede Tops and Shorts

I do not know what it is about this trend, but it simply makes me gag. Maybe it is the feeling of velvet making my skin crawl that cannot get me to like this trend. Not to mention, this trend reminds me of the matching track suits that Kim K used to wear... aka this needs to go.

9. Copycat social media

Ever notice how all of the social media apps are starting to become the same? While some may be owned by the same companies, I do not go to Instagram to watch someone’s “story”. Snapchat has its own purpose. Next, Facebook will have photo dog filters. No social media apps are created the same and the creators need to start getting, well, more original.

10. Giving a flying f**k about other people’s opinions

Wow, did it ever occur to you that this whole article is a plethora of my opinions? Well, welcome to Odyssey. Odyssey is my platform to write as I please. With that being said, I do not expect everyone to love what I write. The beauty of it is, I just do not care. Writing is my gateway to happiness just like taking food pictures and wearing a chocker may be for you. With that, go into 2017 being yourself, liking what you like, and continuing to explore all that makes you, you. If you like the 9 trends above, then good for you. Stop letting people tell you what to like and not like or who to be. I have had a ton of people bash on my articles and yet I am still here.

Happy New Year Everyone, may 2017 be all that you hope it will!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
