It's hard to argue that this past winter was a rough one. With barely any snow and plenty of nice days it seemed a little like winter never quite got around to coming this year. But despite the lack of single digit temperatures the last few months, the long weeks of chilly, dark days still managed to put a damper on the fun of living in such a lively place as New York City. When the days get cold, hibernation season begins and city adventures are put on hold until it's bearable to be outdoors again. But the good news: That's (probably) all behind us now. Spring is here. The sun is out. So shake off those winter blues and go exploring. Has it been cold for so long that you've forgotten all the possibilities for outdoor city fun? Well then, here are 10 activities to get you out and about and enjoying New York again.
1. Take a run (or walk or bike ride) along the Hudson River Piers. Get out of your winter rut by getting in a little exercise. With a great bike and walking path, the piers are a wonderful spot to stretch your legs. If you head over late in the day, you may even catch the sun setting over the water.
2. Watch street performers in Washington Square Park. Now that the sun is shining and WSP is filled with students and average New Yorkers alike, there seems to constantly be at least one performance going on in the park. Pianists, break dancers, and singers are only a few of the acts that command passersby's attention. If you have a minute between class or are just looking for some entertainment, then head to the fountain in the middle of the park where there will most likely be someone dancing up a storm.
3. Head to Brooklyn for Smorgasburg. With the return of good weather Smorgasburg is back in its usual outdoor location, so take a trip to the neighboring borough for some delicious food and a beautiful view of Manhattan across the water.
4. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Yes, this may seem touristy, but every New Yorker should walk across this bridge at least once. With its beautiful view of Manhattan on one side and Brooklyn on the other, the bridge is a perfect spot to take a few photos and walk and talk with a friend.
5. Take a picnic to Central Park. Pack up your favorite snacks, grab a blanket, hop on the 6 train, and get ready for some fun in the sun. Unsure where to spread your blanket? Head to Sheep Meadow for plenty of open space and proximity to lots of the park's other top attractions.
6. Plant an herb garden. Got a sunlight window, balcony, or space on your roof? It's time to turn that drab spot into a little garden. Growing your own herbs can save money at the grocery store and will bring a touch of green to your home. Check out these tips for how to get your garden started.
7. Visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Flowers are blooming again! Don't miss this prime time of year for gazing at magnolias, daffodils, and tulips. For students with their ID, entrance is only $6.
8. Eat outside. As simple as it seems, the luxury to enjoy a meal outdoors is something that New Yorkers just don't have in the winter. Snag an outdoor spot at The Butcher's Daughter for some fresh and healthy food or Buvette for Parisian cuisine or just take a walk down 2nd Ave. where restaurants with outdoor seating are abundant.
9. Wander the West Village. The beautiful West Village comes alive in the spring as people bustle about and the trees and ivy-covered brownstones are alight with green again. Put in your headphones and get lost in the windy streets. Afterwards, stop at Two Boots for a fabulous slice of pizza (yes, they have vegan and gluten-free options. And yes, they're pretty damn good).
10. Go to Coney Island. Though it's still too cold so swim, the weather is starting to be perfect for long strolls on the beach and photography sessions on the boardwalk. If the winter has got you feeling stir-crazy, a dose of beach wandering might be just what you need to jolt you out of that cold weather funk.
