Your party playlist is the key to the entire night. Period. This is what makes or breaks a night out, whether you stay #turnt all night or you fall flat after 10 pm. If you are just now realizing that your playlist is lame and outdated, never fear because this list is going to save your life. For those of you who have read my articles before, you know how cool and edgy I am, so this is just to give you a look into my life, into my success, and most importantly into my playlist for the ultimate night out. Let's get this party started.
1. "All-Star" - Smashmouth
Reason: As if the party could even consider being started without hearing this gem. This is a legendary anthem, period. There is no event that this would be inappropriate to play at, because who doesn't want to be serenaded by the 90's hit that rocked not only the charts but the Shrek soundtrack and defined a generation? (No exaggeration here at all). This isn't a song just to party to, no it's far more than that. It's an inspiration. An inspiration to spend every day like it is your last, to be the best you that you can be, and above all else to be an All-Star.
Notable Lyrics: "Didn't make sense not to live for fun/ Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb/ So much to do, so much to see/ So what's wrong with taking the back streets?/ You'll never know if you don't go/ You'll never shine if you don't glow "
2. "Rockstar" - Nickleback
Reason: Who hasn't heard this song? I challenge you to find me one person in the world who hasn't loved this song, who hasn't embraced this song in all of its glory and screamed it at the top of their lungs. This song is the perfect example of a drunk anthem accompanied by a scathing social critique, a drunk, English majors dream. This is a versatile song, meanings it's one you can scream on top of a bar double fisting PBR on a Saturday night or analyze rhetorically in an effort to understand the materialistic side of today's media. It's a win/win really.
Notable Lyrics: "Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar/ I'm gonna sing those songs that offend the censors/ Gonna pop my pills from a Pez dispenser/ I'll get washed-up singers writing all my songs/ Lip sync 'em every night so I don't get 'em wrong." (#deep)
3. "Sound of Silence" - Simon and Garfunkle
Reason: Nothing says party quite like complete silence, right? Enough said.
Notable Lyrics: "Hello darkness, my old friend/ I've come to talk with you again/ Because a vision softly creeping/ Left its seeds while I was sleeping/ And the vision that was planted in my brain/ Still remains within the sound of silence ."
4. "Bring Me To Life" - Evanescence (Intermittently switch with My Immortal)
Reason: Now there isn't a girl in the world who hasn't related to this at least once in their life. This is a song that transcends all time and space, as soon as you hear that piano start, it's like your eyeliner begins to smudge immediately and you become just a little bit more ~misunderstood~. You feel emotions that just aren't justified, but demand to be felt. (Or is this just me? Haha so random XD) This is a song that makes you emotional, and who wouldn't want that at a party?
Notable Lyrics: "All this time I can't believe I couldn't see/ Kept in the dark but you were there in front of me/ I've been sleeping a thousand years it seems/ Got to open my eyes to everything/ Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul/ Don't let me die here/ There must be something more/ Bring me to life."
5. "Wonderwall" - Oasis
Reason: This is the chance for that one guy to have his moment of glory at the college party. To live the dream of leading the chorus to "Wonderwall" by Oasis, and brag to whoever he is currently dancing with that he totally knows how to play that on guitar. Playing this song at a party means that you are giving another person the best moment of their life, don't deprive a man of this moment.
Notable Lyrics: "Because maybe/ You're gonna be the one that saves me/ And after all/ You're my Wonderwall". (Classic lyrics, many a tattoo has been made from this one line.)
6. "Bump n' Grind" - R Kelly
Reason: Now we get to the nitty gritty. The real down and dirty. This is where the party gets serious. You've been looking at the guy all night, right? Waiting for the right moment, that right vibe to make your move, and this song guarantees it. It's bold, it's brash, it puts it all out there for you and all you have to do is just give your person a look and they know that it's on. Put this song on to set the mood, and then just sit back and let the magic happen.
Notable Lyrics: "My mind's telling me no/ But my body, my body's telling me yes/ Baby, I don't want to hurt nobody/ But there is something that I must confess to you/ I don't see nothing wrong with a little bump and grind."
7. "Beautiful" - Christina Aguilera
Reason: This song is poignant, and one of the most powerful of our generation. It is honest and raw, bringing out the most vulnerable sides of all of us. Which is exactly why you should play it in a room of drunk, and possibly insecure millenials. Much like Bring Me to Life, it's perfect if you want to move beyond just "having a good time" and "turning up" as the kids say, this song highlights the beauty of establishing an emotional connection with another person and finding love in the most unlikely of places. Love yourself, guys, Christina would want you to.
Notable Lyrics: "No matter what we do (no matter what we do)/ No matter what we say (no matter what we say)/ We're the song inside the tune (yeah, oh yeah)/ Full of beautiful mistakes/ And everywhere we go (and everywhere we go)/ The sun will always shine (the sun will always, always, shine)/ And tomorrow we might awake/ On the other side."
8. "Mambo No. 5" - Lou Bega
Reason: Now if this doesn't take you back to your seventh-grade dance, then nothing will. And what better of an environment to model your life on now, then who you were in middle school? This is a fantastic song, full of rhythm and simply pure unrestrained joy. Added bonus if your name was Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary or Jessica, because getting to yell your name was honestly the highlight of anyone's night. Fun Fact: This was the theme song for the 2000 Democratic Convention (Bill Clinton's party) until someone noticed the line, "A little bit of Monica in my life." So if Bill Clinton could party to it, you know you can too.
Notable Lyrics: "I do ought to/ Fall in love with a girl like you/ Cause you can't run, you can't hide/ You and me gonna touch the sky/ Mambo No. 5! "
9. "Holla" - Baha Men
Reason: Anyone can suggest "Who Let the Dogs Out " as the ultimate party anthem, but I think those people completely lack creativity (and if someone has to tell you to put that song on your playlist and it's now already on there you need more help than this list can give you). "Holla", on the other hand, is a diamond in the rough. Throughout the song, the lyrics illustrate the party that they are about to create if only people would "Holla". It's legendary, and pretty meta for a song that I first heard on the "Garfield: The Movie" Soundtrack. 10/10.
Notable Lyrics: "Like that, we gonna raise the roof/ Let the music do it's thing to you/ Play ahead and get it started/ Move your body/ Come on now take you for a ride/ Drop the top and dance all night/ Life is good so let me hear you holler."
10. "Blank Space" - Taylor Swift
This is a song that touches the heart of every person in the room as soon as you hear it. You connect with it emotionally and you know that everyone else in the room feels the same way that you do in that exact moment. There is a universal aspect to T-swizzle that is just unmatched really, making this the ultimate party jam. So whether you are a heartbroken teen trying to feel love again, or the heartbreaker that this song is about, we can all find comfort knowing that we are just nightmares dressed like daydreams.
Notable Lyrics: "Screaming, crying, perfect storms/ I can make all the tables turn/ Rose garden filled with thorns/ Keep you second guessing like/ "Oh my God, who is she?"/ I get drunk on jealousy/ But you'll come back each time you leave/ 'Cause, darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream."
