10 Small Changes You Can Make To Help The Environment

There is a large subset within popular culture that emphasizes being more "sustainable." We hear influencers talking all high and mighty about how they minimize their environmental impacts, and this can seem like a daunting class. Many switches that are pushed onto us by the media are very unattainable and can make for a non-permanent change in our habits. Rather than make a bunch of big lifestyle changes at once, here are ten easy switches that anyone can make to start on the path of being more sustainable.

1) Slow Down Your Intake of Fast Fashion

Whether this means shopping from second-hand stores or from companies that use organic materials.

2) Donate Old Clothes

A large portion of waste in landfills comes from old clothing By opting to donate this allows other people to shop more ethically while also limiting garbage.

3) Use Reusable Water BottlesĀ

This is one we have all heard. Stop buying those plastic water bottles and just bring your own personal bottle around.

4) Use Reusable Bags

This doesn't have to be some fancy brand of reusable grocery bag. Your old backpack can operate as a shopping bag.

5) Limit Use of Disposable Goods

This can be as small always using metal silverware rather than plastic, or using reusable plates rather than paper plates.

6) Recycle Wherever Possible

Rather than just recycling cans or boxes, you can make a specific effort to learn the rules of recycling and minimize your garbage output.

7) Opt To Go Paperless

Rather than buying a physical newspaper choose to read it online. Or maybe this means taking the extra second to get an email receipt rather than a paper copy.

8) Use Cars Less

Rather than driving yourself around, public transport or walking is a great option. Carpooling with friends can also minimize the environmental impacts of cars.

9) Limit Water Usage

Try timing showers to make them shorter or more efficient. Maybe try washing your face in the shower rather than running the tap.

10) Switch To Non-Dairy Milks

A switch to a plant-based lifestyle can be difficult. By starting with small changes such as with milk, it can start creating new habits.

A switch to a lifestyle that is more environmentally friendly is not an easy one. With the world we live in, we as consumers must create a specific effort to be more eco-friendly. These changes do not have to be overnight. Every small change is one step forward towards making our planet a healthier place.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast ā€œBirthdayā€ on anyoneā€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to ā€œBack In The U.S.S.Rā€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iā€™m not someone to ā€œfangirlā€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
