Ah, the holiday season. It's a time of giving, being jolly, and rushing around the mall for several days straight, battling soccer moms for the best deals. Even though it can make me a little frazzled sometimes, I love the holidays. Christmas is my whole family's favorite time of year, and no one gets more excited about it than me. Most of my favorite traditions revolve around Christmas, and there's just something about the feeling in the air that puts a bounce in my step everywhere I go.
Of course, some people (everyone) I know would say I love Christmas a little too much. Some would even go as far as calling me a "Christmas fiend." To be honest, they aren't wrong. I probably do get a bit too into the Christmas spirit, but you won't find any shame in my holiday game. Christmas, I think, is worth celebrating with everything you've got. If you love Christmas, but you aren't sure if you're a Christmas fiend like me, here are some signs that you could be a little too Christmas obsessed.
1. You tell everyone "Happy First Day of Christmas!" on November 1st.
For me, the Christmas season starts at the stroke of midnight on Halloween. I would start swapping out the pumpkins for snowmen at 12:01 a.m. if I could. My friends and family were all incredibly confused when I started bouncing around and shouting that it was Christmas 1st. I also made a point to remind them what day of Christmas it was for the rest of November.
2. You buy a Christmas tree in the first week of November.
Granted, it was a tiny Christmas tree for my apartment at school, but I still bought one. My roommates and I decorated it with miniature ornaments the same night. It's still sitting happily on our coffee table, and now it has presents underneath it, which makes it even more special. Extra Christmas points for our tiny tree.
3. You yell "Christmas!" every time you see something even remotely Christmas-related.
I can't walk into Target anymore without getting excited about the little Christmas sign that they have hanging up over the entrance. I'm also prone to flailing my arms around every time I see Christmas lights on houses, random decorations in store windows or on the street, or even tiny dogs walking by wearing festive sweaters. If I notice the Christmas, everyone has to notice the Christmas.
4. You buy all your friends' Christmas gifts and wrap them before Thanksgiving.
Online shopping was my best friend this year, and I had a plethora of gifts shipped to my house within the second week of November. As soon as I got home for Thanksgiving break, I made my dad drag the Christmas boxes down so I could dig out the wrapping paper. I'm still bursting with excitement waiting to give my friends their presents.
5. You spend your entire Thanksgiving break putting up Christmas decorations.
My parents and I started decorating the first Saturday I was home, and we didn't finish until the next Saturday. Granted, we weren't decorating all day, every day, but unpacking our giant Christmas collection still took ages. It's a big challenge to tackle when my mom and I are both busy with college-related work, but we still managed, and our house is now the Christmas wonderland it was always meant to be.
6. You bully your dad into turning on the outdoor Christmas lights before Thanksgiving.
Even though we had all the Christmas stuff set up in our front yard by Wednesday, my dad insisted that we couldn't turn them on until Friday because that was "the rule." My mom and I wouldn't stop pestering him about it until he caved and turned on the lights for us Wednesday night. Sorry, Thanksgiving, you've been outshone by Christmas this year.
7. You start listening to Christmas music/watching Christmas movies before Thanksgiving (or any time of the year that isn't the "Christmas season").
I'm usually pretty good about saving Christmas music and movies for the proper season, but once the radio starts playing Christmas songs, all bets are off. My drive home from school for Thanksgiving break was filled with Christmas music. My family and I went through almost our entire Christmas movie collection during break. I'm listening to a Christmas playlist on Spotify as I write this article. I can't help myself-- it just makes everything seem so much brighter when the happiest Christmas tree is singing in your ear.
8. You create an entire "church of Christmas."
Now, this one wasn't actually something I did. One of my coworkers and her friend created the "Church of Christmas" out of spite for someone who told them they couldn't do anything Christmas-related before Thanksgiving. At this point, the joke seems to have grown into something far more intense than they meant it to-- they even have their own "Ten Commandments of Christmas." I might have to swear myself over to the Christmas Church soon. It seems like my spiritual calling.
9. You decorate yourself for Christmas.
Every time we bring the Christmas decorations out in my house, I have to wear some of them. This year, I wrapped myself up in some sparkly garland and told my mom, very seriously, "I am Christmas." She just laughed at me and told me to save some for the tree. My amazing roommate also got me the closest thing I've ever had to a Christmas sweater this year-- a t-shirt with all the Eeveelutions on it in a Christmas sweater pattern. I would wear it every day if I could, but I imagine that would get a little gross, and I couldn't defile Christmas like that.
10. Your roommates, friends, family and/or everyone you know start calling you crazy because you won't stop talking about Christmas.
This one is on here per request of my roommate, since she's the one who's been calling me crazy the most, and our other roommate certainly agrees with her. I just can't help it, though. If Christmas is as crazy as I get, then I have no regrets.
Sound like you yet? Never fear, Christmas lovers. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being obsessed with Christmas. Embrace your inner Santa Claus and go wild. A chance to be happy and celebrate is never something to take for granted.
