Currently the school load and stress is at an ultimate high, sleep is low, moods are everywhere, and you are just so DONE. Not all of these apply to being a sophomore, but the pressure is definitely on at this time of year in the semester. If the following steps apply to you, you are experiencing a sophomore slump.
1. Food
All you ever are is hungry. You eat, and you're hungry. You're studying, and you're hungry. You're trying to nap, but you're too hungry. Is there even time to eat anymore?
2. ADD...squirrel?
You go to class ready to tackle the day and five minutes into the lecture you're thinking about food. Or maybe what your plans for that night are, or about the girl or boy sitting next to you, or why there are no windows in your lecture hall, or you're on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Tinder. Basically, you're doing anything but paying attention.
3. Mental Breakdowns
Sunday night rolls around and you look at your week and think "WHY!?!?" and just have a panic attack/cry session and instead of trying to get ahead for the week, you're crying. And while you're crying, you realize you're wasting time to do work which only makes you cry harder.
4. 24 Hours Is Not Enough Time
You can wake up at 6am and plan your day, but still not have enough time to do everything you need to get done. There's papers, exams, meetings, commitments, etc. and trying to feel accomplished is too far of a stretch.
5. The "Catch Up"
So you finally think you've caught up for the week, and you have a few hours to spare. While relaxing, your professor emails you with a new assignment, which reminds you that you have that other assignment due in a few days, which leads you right back to studying and doing work...again.
6. You Just Want Netflix
I always say I have enough time at night to watch Netflix! No matter what's due or worrying about what you should be doing, you end up binge watching Netflix for a few hours. And sometimes, that's okay.
7. GPA
This applies mostly if you're a sophomore. More than likely your major requires a GPA minimum, and this semester will make or break you. You can either finish strong, or depend on summer courses to get your GPA where you need it. Nonetheless, it's a stressful time because your GPA is kind of defining you.
8. Optimism
With only four weeks of school left, you have an idea of where your grades will end up. You're either super optimistic right now or you've just given up. There's no in between because you know at this point, asking for extra credit is NOT an option.
9. Office Hours
Along with knowing extra credit is not an option, you remember this little thing called office hours, which you haven't gone to all semester because you just knew you had a handle on things. So you go, and no such luck. Hey, at least you tried? (Future tip, get to know your professors at the beginning of the semester).
10. Perserverance
No matter what situation you may be in right now, the reality is there is only a few more weeks of class. You've made it this far. The end may seem light years away, but it's closer than you think. Don't forget to breathe and take everything day by day. You'll wind up right where you need to be.
