I could probably come up with hundreds of reasons why I'm grateful to have grown up only 20 minutes outside of one of the greatest cities; Boston. It's an extremely "interesting" place, to say the least, to have grown up and still live in. Boston itself is a certain lifestyle.
So here are a few things you know to be true if you have ever lived in or near the Boston area:
1. Dunkin's coffee is a life staple.
Dunkie's coffee may not always be the greatest, but regardless, we will never stop buying our medium iced regulars. (Also, you have to call it either Dunkie's, Dunkin's, or simply Dunks. But never "Dunkin Donuts".) And if you haven't seen Casey Affleck's Dunkin's sketch from SNL, it just about sums it up.
2. The face you make when people pronounce their r's and ing's perfectly.
3. When someone asks you to say "pahk the cah in Hahvahd yahd".
This happens basically any time you leave the New England area and someone finds out you're from Mass. And it never fails to be extremely obnoxious.
4. Probably some of your favorite movies are based in Boston.
"The Town", "The Departed", "Fever Pitch", and "Goodwill Hunting" are most likely a few movies you saw very early on in life (and you probably even know someone who acted as an extra in one of them).
5. The T.
Boston traffic is awful basically all of the time, so most of us resort to riding the T into the city when we want to make a trip. However, the T is less than glamorous...odds are your mom always told you to wrap your sleeve around the pole if you ever find yourself without a seat. Also, if you ever ride the T after a Sox game, be prepared for the loud, drunk fans you'll have to share it with.
6. Mike's Pastry.
Literally just the best cannoli's you will ever have. You can never pass through the north end without making a pit stop (there is never not a line though, so make sure you set aside some wait time).
7. How you know you're almost home...
This really only applies to Eastern Mass I guess. But really, who cares about any other part?
8. No one understanding half the things you say.
Phrases like "bang a u-ey", "packie run", "bubblah", "wicked pissah" are completely lost on people outside of MA. The first time I told a friend at school that I needed "to get a drink from the bubblah", she looked at me like I was crazy. What's really crazy is calling that a "water fountain"...
9. Even if you don't care about sports...you do.
Being a Boston sports team fan is sort of just part of the package of being raised around here. Even if you don't follow sports, you better be wicked pissed if the Bruins lose.
10. The crazy weather.
It could be 20 degrees and snowing one day, and then 60 degrees and sunny two days later. And no matter how long you live here, you will never stop complaining about it.
