We all had our "thing" in high school. Some kids are into art, others photography, or the more typically highly-praised activities like football and basketball.
I am happy to say that as a cheerleader, I got to be a part of more than one. Whether it be posing for the year book, crafting the football team's run-through banner, or decorating the gym for pep-rallies, cheerleading gave me so many opportunities to be more than just a student at my high school. I also got to meet people in all sorts of groups and clubs and found how special everyone's contribution can be to the school.
Therefore, I can't say I don't often feel nostalgic when thinking about my days as a Jefferson Broncho Cheerleader. To my fellow cheerleaders out there, I'm sure you can relate to the things we do in our moments of cheer-based nostalgia.
1. You Still Know Your School's Fight Song
At my school we cheered to the fight song before the game to pump up the crowd, ending with "J-J-J-E-F-FF-F-E-R-S-S-S-O-N. Jefferson, Jefferson, Jeff-er-son", as well as after the game if we had won (If you are a current Jeff student/ alum, you probably read that in perfect rhythm). That being said, cheering for four years for football, as well as girls and boys basketball, the song has been forever engraved in my mind. I still get weird looks as I sing the opening lyrics "forward the red, forward the black" to myself.
2. The "Bring It On" Movies Are Still Your Go-To
Yes each and every one of them. Whether you are a fan of the "mighty-mighty" Toros, East Compton Clovers, Stingers, or Crenshaw Heights Warriors, these movies never failed to relate to real-life cheerleaders in the most humorous and outrageous ways possible. The movies accurately depict the physical demand of cheerleading, bonds with your teammates, and everything in between. You weren't doing it right if you made it through a practice or game without a "Bring It On" movie reference. My squad even attempted some of the builds we had seen in the films and also called a girl on our team "Big-Red."
3. You Never Miss Cheer "Comps" on T.V.
Many of us cheerleaders, current and ex, are glued to the television when ESPN airs the International All-Star Championship, AmeriCheer International Championship, and all the other wonderful cheerleading competitions held at Walt Disney World Resort. This event lets us see stunts we dreamed of being able to achieve ourselves as well as new builds we have never seen done before. While definitely nowhere near as qualified, its fun to be an unofficial at- home- judge too.
4. You Follow Cheerleading Social Media Pages
I'm sure I'm not alone in following collegiate cheer squads on Instagram, Twitter, and just about every other social media outlet. I follow cheer pages that have videos of high school cheer competitions, cheer apparel, as well as funny and completely relatable cheer gifs and awesome stunts. I also am guilty of looking through Varsity's new cheer uniforms and warm-ups. Cheerleading is addicting.
5. You Still Wear Spanks Under All Your Skirts And Dresses
Cheerleaders wear what are referred to as spanks, under their uniforms so that they are able to freely do their jumps, stunts, and builds. This added a level of insurance: wearing the uniform inspires most cheerleaders to throw on a pair of spanks when wearing regular skirts and dresses. This is comfortable and normal to us. It also allows for throwing cheer stunts at any form of social gathering.
6. Your Pom-Poms And Megaphone Are A Forever Keep-Sake
I graduated from high school two years ago and I still have both my pom-poms and megaphone. I don't know what it is, maybe because my school customized our megaphones however we wanted, there are so many memories tied to both, or simply because they cost a decent amount of money, I can not bring myself to get rid of either. They help add some color to my room anyway.
7. You Catch Yourself Mindlessly Doing Old Chants
As I said, I do not cheer in college and graduated from high school two years ago. However, I still remember a majority of the chants I did each and every Friday night. I can be doing the dishes or cleaning my room and will start saying and motioning the chants. It's also hard not to want to do them when someone mentions your school. They're just so catchy.
8. You Wonder If You Can Still Do Cheer-Related Things You Could Do Back In High School
This is something they should teach at cheer camp. When it's over, it's over. And the longer you are out of cheerleading the less likely you are going to be able to do certain things. Remember those few months you had off before cheer camp and then would come back wondering why your splits sort of sucked? Yeah, so its kind of amazing that years later we are still attempting to pull heel stretches and scorpions and think that we will still be able to do it. PSA: Please Don't Attempt Anything Cheer-Related That You Did In High School. You will hurt yourself or others around you.
9. You Consider Yourself An Unofficial Cheerleading Expert
This goes for things all cheerleading -related. You love when people ask you about cheerleading and you can go on and on about the dos and don'ts of cheer as well as explain the lingo and various stunts and builds. As mentioned earlier, you also sit at home watching cheer comps and determine what groups have done wrong even before the judges give their scores. You probably also like to explain things seen in cheerleading movies such as "Bring It On" to people who weren't cheerleaders. It's such a fascinating subject.
