  1. Parks and Recreation. Honestly if you haven’t watched this yet, I’m a little surprised. With a cast starring Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt, and Aziz Ansari, it was destined to be a hit. It’s a bit like The Office with witty and hilarious dialogue in a work place but with a stronger emphasis on all the character’s lives. The final season has not yet been uploaded to Netflix. Also, personally, I would skip over season one. It's not the best and not a lot of development happens.
  2. Scandal. Let’s just get this out of the way first, Kerri Washington is amazing. She stars in this drama as Olivia Pope who works as a “fixer” in Washington DC. The character works to solve and hide the personal problems of the elite. It also includes a romantic plot that people either love or hate (I’m not a fan of it tbh). Check it out and decide where you stand. It currently has four seasons on Netflix.

  3. Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This show has a revolutionary concept concerning character development- the characters don’t develop. Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton who created and star in the show wanted to be able to create an endless set of possibilities as the characters can never learn from their mistakes and grow as characters from other TV series can. Also, just a heads-up, this show is not a family show. They cover a lot of controversial topics from abortion, the drinking age, racism, and Nazis, but in a humorous way. The tenth season just became available on Netflix.
  4. How to Get Away with Murder. A heart-wrenching drama fueled with crime, passion, and suspenseful cliffhangers that can get you hooked after just the first episode. Season one is currently the only season available on Netflix but the next season is available on ABC’s website and Hulu.
  5. New Girl. A hilarious comedy about a twenty-something year old named Jess who moves in with three guys. It has amazing characters and a very realistic view of what it’s like to live as an “emerging adult”. Season four just came out on Netflix and season five started January fifth, so there’s plenty of it available to watch.
  6. House of Cards. A political drama set with Kevin Spacey as a power-hungry politician in Washington D.C. who will do whatever it takes to further both his political and personal agendas. It’s fast paced and rather dark, but a great show for those interested in politics or drama. The show currently has three seasons on Netflix and I’m not going to lie, I’ve been on hiatus from the show since watching the first episode of season three; it’s super intense.
  7. The Office. I almost left this off the list because I can’t imagine a world in which someone has not watched The Office. It’s won 38 awards and been nominated a total of 150 times so I think I can call it award-winning. It’s an award-winning office comedy with an insanely talented and hilarious staff including Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and Mindy Kaling. It has a total of nine seasons all available on Netflix.
  8. Fixer Upper. Ok, secret time- I’m a closet HGTV addict and this is one of my favorite shows on the channel. Joanna and Chip Gaines are a husband and wife real estate/construction/design team that work together to buy “fixer uppers” at a low cost and then renovate them to become their client’s dream home. What sets this show apart from so many of the other house renovation shows is the couple. Chip and Joanna are lively, passionate and hilarious. They truly make the show the hit it has become. The first season is on Netflix.
  9. Master of None. Aziz Anzari can really do it all. He writes, produces, directs and stars in his new show available on Netflix. He stars as a single, adult guy in New York trying to figure out modern relationships. It is hilarious and provides an introspective view on life as a single adult.
  10. Modern Romance. So this isn’t a show, but it’s a book written by Aziz Ansari that provides a look into the development of the connection with romance and technology in the modern age and provides a sociological outlook on modern day romance. It is insightful, hilarious and a really easy read. So if your New Year’s resolution was to read more books, this is the perfect book to begin with.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
