I've always been the shortest person around no matter where I am. Sometimes it's great, but other times it puts me at a disadvantage. It's very rare that I meet someone shorter than me, so when I do, I immediately befriend them. Because let's face it, there are some things in life that only short girls understand, and we have to stick together. So if you're a short girl like me, you've probably encountered most of these challenges.
1. Shelves are your worst nightmare.
It seems like everything we could ever possibly need is always on the top shelf. Of course. How does it get there? We'll never know. But it's a nightmare to get it down. If you're lucky, someone who is a bit (or a lot) taller is nearby to help. But most of the time, you just end up climbing on all of the other shelves to get to the top. It's a risky business.
2. It is absolutely impossible to find pants that fit.
Every single pair of pants are too long. The best thing you can do is find a good tailor because you're bound to be there every time you buy a new pair of jeans.
3. Maxi dresses are not an option.
It's the same dilemma as the pants. Unless you want to be stuck at the tailor for every event, don't buy a long dress.
4. You can't see anything. Ever.
No matter where you go, you're surrounded by people who are taller than you and block the view. Even if you find a seat with no one in front of you, a giant will wander in at the last second and grab that seat in front of you. Every time.
5. You always look awkward in photos.
Because all of your friends are twice your height, you will never look as good as they do in group photos. Just accept the fact that it's not going to happen. After a while, you may just learn how to pose the right way to look a bit less awkward. But I'm still waiting for that day.
6. Your feet dangle anytime you sit down.
Most chairs are not made for short people so your feet don't always reach the floor. The worst case is when your feet fall asleep after sitting for a long period of time, and then you have to learn how to walk all over again.
7. You were always on the front row in class pictures.
Picture day in elementary school was the absolute worst. You always knew you would end up on the front row so you had to look perfect. Not just your face had to be perfect, but your whole outfit too, because you couldn't hide behind the other kids.
8. Cars are not made for short people.
You can never reach the pedals to drive, even when the seat is pushed as far forward as possible. Also, when the sun is in your eyes, any normal person would use the sun visor to block it, but not us short people. Every time the sun is in my eyes, I go to lower the sun visor and it doesn't even meet my eye level so it does absolutely nothing. And big cars and trucks are even worse, because getting in and out of them is a daily struggle. You basically have to jump into the truck and then "gracefully" fall out.
9. Mirrors are always placed too high.
Almost every mirror is just a few inches above your face, and you have to stand on your toes to even get a glimpse of what you look like.
10. You're mistaken as a child.
Let's face it, you're the same height as the average ten year old child. No matter how old you actually are, people will automatically assume that you're way younger just based on your height. This can come in handy sometimes though with child discounts. Ordering off the children's menu can save you a whole lot of money.
So if you understand these struggles, join the club. Being short isn't all bad though. For the most part, we can be pretty cute. We're just fun sized. And who doesn't want a little more fun in their life?
