10 New (School) Year Resolutions

New year, new you, right?

10 New (School) Year Resolutions
Farrah Matthews

Whether you are starting your freshman year or senior year in college, here are some resolutions to keep up with for a great year.

1. Take more pictures.

… and print them. When you go to your camera roll, if there are more selfies than us-ies, this resolution if for you. I say print them out because how often do you actually go back and look at pictures once you get a new phone and back them up on your computer?

2. Support your school.

Wear your school color on Fridays (Purple and Gold, Go Cats!), go to the football games, and attend the events on campus. Not only are these events a lot of fun, but there is usually free stuff too.

3. Spend more time with your friends.

I think everyone has had that moment when they are literally sitting in a room with their friends and they look up and everyone else is looking down at their phone, so you just go back to scrolling through Instagram. Put your phone down people. And if your friends are on their phones, strike up a conversation that will make them want to put it down. Play a game that requires human interaction. Leave your phone in your room and go spend time with your roommates.

4. Take adventures.

Take adventures, take adventures, take adventures. Take the adventures that you will talk to your friends about for the next five years. Oh, and don’t forget to take some pictures while you’re there!

5. Talk to people you see in the gym.

You know that guy that you seen in the gym all last year, talk to him! If someone needs a spot, help them out. If you see someone waiting for the squat rack you’re using, offer them to work in with you. These little things can make you some new friends, and you will be surprised what you can learn from others in the gym.

6. Stop caring so much about what others think.

So you’re at a stoplight at the main entrance to campus, your favorite song just came on, and you’re in the car with your bestie, what do you do? That’s right! Put the windows down, turn the music all the way up, sing and car dance like nobody is watching. So much fun is lost when you are too embarrassed to have it.

7. Wear “the outfit”.

You know the outfit I’m talking about. The one that you have had in your closet forever and you can’t find an occasion to wear it or every time you put it on, you change because you think it’s too much. Wear it anyways! To class, to go eat, to go out with your friends, it doesn’t matter.

8. Find your passion.

What do you want to do with your major? There are literally 500 career paths I could take with mine. How can you make a difference? Job shadow, volunteer, or getting an internship can help you find what you love doing. Or it can at least show you what you don’t want to be doing.

9. Choose your battles.

Laugh it off and take a deep breath in. If you aren’t still mad about it in 24 hours then it’s not worth fighting about or holding a grudge for anyways. Don’t burn your bridges because of something petty.

10. Say “Yes” More Than You Say “No”.

Okay, I’m not telling anyone to try drugs or try anything that will put them in jail. This one means that your roommate just asked you to go to the pool for an hour before class and you would usually say no because you are afraid of being late or you don’t want to waste time. Go to the pool! Say yes to your friend that’s been asking you to go to the gym, say yes to your friend that invited you to church, say yes to some old friends when they want to go out on Thursdays.

I wish I would have realized a lot of these before starting my senior year of college, but here is your heads up. Try out some (or all) of these New School Year Resolutions and see if it makes a difference in the memories you make this year.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
