The Last 10 Rubber Ovals On My Left Arm

Since you're probably getting tired of being informed of what these mean to me.

The Last 10 Rubber Ovals On My Left Arm
Heber Guerra-Recinos

This will be the last of this series of articles about my collection of wristbands, since, well, you know, I've run out of wristbands to actually write about. Heh. Regardless, here are the last 10 wristbands on my left arm that I have yet to write about.

21. Outlive Your Life Band

This band I received either the summer before my Junior or Senior year of high school. I received it after a service at Gracepoint that I went to. The message "Outlive Your Life" simply means that in serving others and being more like Jesus, we are essentially outliving our lives, since, after we are gone (dead obviously), what we did for others will still live on with them and their memories.

22. End Distracted Driving Band

This band I received during one of my numerous, seemingly random, and somewhat pointless visits to the Alumni House on my campus. In the Alumni house, there is a small table near the front entrance with a bowl filled with these bands. I took one because, well, wristbands. However, I took it to show my support for ending distracted driving. The band was created by the Casey Feldman Foundation, a foundation created to remember Casey Feldman, a senior at Fordham University who died on July 17th, 2009 after being hit by a distracted driver. The foundation has created a scholarship and financial help for "individuals, groups, and institutions whose interests and goals align with those of Casey". While I have not experienced any type of loss from distracted driving, I am still aware of how dangerous it is. I will be honest and say that I have done it myself sometimes, but have stopped. It puts me and others around me in danger.

23. Suicide Band

No, the band doesn't condone suicide. I got this one some time first semester, from my friend Giselle, even though we have dozens of them in my school's health services. It has the number 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433) on it, with a link, https://www.imalive.org. While I have not experienced suicide in the form of someone I know personally, I kept the band because wristband and because I felt that it could help me in the future, if I ever encounter and befriend someone who has suicidal tendencies, or thoughts, or shows signs of it. Plus, it glows in the dark!

24. Youth For The Nations Band 3

The third of four wristbands that I obtained from my attending Youth For The Nations last July. This one is rainbow colored, as opposed to the first toe, which are white and black, though it still reads "Give Us The Nations 2k16!". Once again, it is a reminder of me attending the camp, and all that I experienced there.

25. Stop Sexual Assault! Band

This one I received about midway through April of this year. I got it at my school's event of "Walk A Mile In Her Shoes", an event that is held to raise awareness and fight against sexual assault, gender violence, and rape against women (and men too). It was held by one of my school's sororities. This band shows my support for the fight against said issues, being that, now, I am much more aware of the issue.

26. Rockland Recycles Band

I do not remember when and where I got this band. I think I got it from the owner of my house, Don (Mr. in Spanish) Eduardo. All I know is I support recycling as a whole, especially in my county (Rockland). My participation in recycling is done through Don Eduardo. We give him all of our used water bottles and such, and he takes them and recycles them at our local Costco.

27. Youth For The Nations Band 4

Same as number 24, except this one is a tan color. Also, the reason I have four of the same band (albeit different color variations) is because, honestly, I saw a bag full of them and took four, for all of the reason I mentioned in number 10 and because I could greatly expand my collection in one shot (4 bands).

28. Hope/Strength Band

This band I received in October of 2016, during my first semester of college. I got it from a table that was held by a sorority of my school. Being that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I have participated in events that intend to fight a form of cancer (Relay for Life), I took one to show my support for the cause; the fight against Breast Cancer. And I gave a couple of dollars, so it wasn't like I just took a band and left.

29. Speed The Light/Feed A Child Band

This band I received during one of the conventions I attended, I believe it was 2014. It was to show my support for Speed The Light, and organization that provides resources and finances for missionaries around the world. An example of which would be a car, to cross a specific terrain that would otherwise be incredibly difficult on foot. It also reads "Feed A Child", which, other than the obvious literal meaning, was never made clear as to what it meant. The name "Speed The Light", too, was never made clear, though my guess is that in helping missionaries, we are "speeding up" the process of sharing and spreading the "light" of the Gospel.

30. Limitless/#NYDYC14 Band

I received this one sophomore year of high school, in April of 2014, at the New York District Youth Convention. I don't remember much from this convention, other than the fact that it was fun, and the message was pretty good. The message itself was based on the theme, "Limitless", in that Jesus' love and all of His qualities are limitless.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE

31. "Metallic" Cross Wrist Thingie

Ha, fooled ya. I actually have 32 things on my wrists. This one, however, is on my right arm, being that it was a gift. It's of a metallic looking material, with a cross in the center. I received it from my pseudo grandparents, whom are very close friends of my mother. My mother affectionately refers to them as "Mommy" and "Daddy". They were both at my birth, and they were both at my high school graduation. And so, this was their graduation gift for me. I thought about wearing it on top of my wristbands, but I dismissed the idea, since I wanted it to stand out in a way, and it won't close on top of the rest.

32. Ocean City Band

This, while not a wristband, is the most recent band I have received. As of me typing this sentence, I got it 6 days ago (Sunday, July 16th). During that day, I was in Ocean City, Maryland. I had just finished my first internship (the Cherry Tree Young Writer's Conference), and was staying at my roommate's place. That Sunday, he, my two other close friends, Dylan and Amanda, and I, went to the Ocean City beach, something we had planned for a while, since I had always wanted to go to the beach with them. After we were planning on leaving, we were walking on the boardwalk of the beach, and I wanted to buy a wristband to 1. add to my collection and 2. have a reminder of that wonderful day with loved ones. However, I was unable to find any rubber ones like my previous 30, but I found this one. According to the label, it contains water from Mount Everest and mud from the Dead Sea. It's not traditional, but I love it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
