All college students make resolutions every year, whether it's hitting the gym, the books, or their own head in frustration. Here are ten doable resolutions that will keep college students healthier, happier, and more successful all year long.
1. Find an exercise you enjoy.
The start of a new year doesn't mean that you have to commit to going to the gym. Find an exercise that works for you, like going to a group exercise class, doing yoga from a YouTube video, or asking friends to go on a run with you!
2. Make healthier food or home-cooked meals a regularity.
Many schools offer healthier dining options, or if you have access to a kitchen, try a new Pinterest recipe! Even if you're eating on campus, try to have a fruit or a vegetable at every meal or grab something healthy to eat in between classes. That being said: don't give up hungover pizza or midnight mozzarella sticks. Health is important, but you deserve a treat.
3. Start off organized and make maintaining it a priority.
You're more productive when your room or workspace is clean and you're less likely to procrastinate if you have a clearly organized agenda book or calendar. Once you start, it's easy to keep up, and you'll thank yourself for it come midterms and finals.
4. Save money, even if it's only a little bit.
College students don't have a reputation for having lots of extra money, but that's okay! Saving the money from one drink at Starbucks or one Chipotle once or twice a month can save you over a hundred dollars over the year, and then you can use it to treat yo'self.
5. Do not use Netflix as an excuse to miss out.
We all love sitting at home with nothing but our laptops, but this coming year, resolve to spend more time socializing or doing something you love than blowing another six hours on a How I Met Your Mother binge.
6. Do something that makes YOU proud.
Whether it's on an exam or your whole major, a surprising amount of time is spent pleasing someone else. This year, resolve to do something that YOU'RE proud of, whether that is trying a new club or getting a good grade.
7. Do not sacrifice your sleep for grades.
Grades are important, but so is your sleep. You'll be more attentive and happier during the day if you set aside at least seven hours to rest.
8. Go out.
College is about the work, but it's supposed to be fun. Go out with friends, have one too many, and laugh about it over brunch the next day. Don't let your responsibilities cloud you from enjoying yourself.
9. Prioritize yourself.
If this means not biting off more than you can handle, setting aside some time each day to do something relaxing, or making your own happiness and mental health of first importance, make sure you make yourself a priority. Not grades, not friends, not internships, not extracurriculars... you.
10. Remind yourself that you're doing your best.
All too often, college students are stressed out, overwhelmed, and hard on themselves. This year, gently remind yourself that it's okay. You're doing your best, you're well on your way, and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
