I want to state something right away. I am not a medical professional, but I am a migraine sufferer. Migraines suck. Headaches in general suck. Most times they are inevitable, and that sucks too. Light sensitivity, hormones, the weather, smells, loud sounds or too much screen time could trigger a migraine to occur. I believe that home remedies work for migraines and headaches, but at the same time Tylenol can work wonders.
Here's a list of some remedies that I've discovered actually work.
1. Invest in a heat wrap
Zap it in the microwave and instantly experience the relief once placed on your head! My mom (a fellow migraine sufferer, gotta love those genetics!) told me about this trick. It's a go-to remedy in our household.
This is hands down the BEST kind:
2. Cold wash cloth
Similar to a heat wrap, this can be placed on your head or neck, wherever your migraine is stemming from. The coolness of the wash cloth can allow you to feel more relaxed and less stressed from the pain in your head.
3. Take a hot shower
The hotter the water, the better! Keep it a safe temperature though -- you don't want to burn yourself.
4. Deep breathe
Taking some deep breaths can completely calm your body and relieve the pain that your migraine is causing you. The greatest tip I've learned is to inhale like you're smelling a flower and exhale like you are blowing out a candle.
5. Caffeine
Sometimes drinking a soda can help ease my migraine. Or if you're a coffee drinker, fix up a cup for yourself. Caffeine intake works for some, but doesn't for others when experiencing head pain.
6. Take Excedrin or Extra Strength Tylenol
In addition to natural remedies, taking a dose of Excedrin, or whatever pain reliever you use, can really cure a migraine. Fun fact: off-brand Excedrin works the same and is half the cost!
7. Head massage
Nicely ask someone to massage your head, bridge of your nose, or neck to lessen your headache pain. Massages are literal miracles when it comes to migraines, trust me.
8. Drink plenty of water
Migraines can also occur because of dehydration, so make sure you're keeping up your water intake!
9. Essential Oils
A friend of mine gave me a spray bottle filled with an essential oil when I was having a migraine. The fragrance of the oil calmed my nerves that came along with my headache and reduced the pain. Peppermint, basil and rosemary are essential oils that are proven to cure headaches.
10. SLEEP
The most important thing to do when you have a headache or migraine is to go to bed. Oftentimes you can sleep off the discomfort that comes along with them and feel refreshed when you awake. Make sure that all distractions are put away (I'm talking about you, electronics!). Allow for your room to be dark and quiet. Sweet dreams await.
With these tips, you can help ward off your next migraine or headache. Don't let them interfere with your day!
