10 Reasons Why I'm Thankful For My All-Girls Catholic High School

It wasn't about keeping us away from boys.

When I walked across the stage and officially graduated high school, I thought, "Wow I'm FINALLY done, I'll never miss school!" It wasn't that I didn't adore my high school, but more that I had extremely high expectations for college. While I adore college, I found myself missing my high school more than ever as I stared my sophomore year of college. But, why?

1. The sisterhood was incomparable.

I joined a sorority when I entered college expecting to find the same level of connectedness I had with my high school sisters, and was sorely mistaken. Nothing beats four years together, doing the same thing every day and sharing new experiences constantly.

2. Our school spirit made everything better.

Between the senior's first day, and the vine competition we got ourselves into, our school spirit was second to none.

3. Our education.

Sitting in my college level Honors World Literature class made me realize one thing: high school made this challenging class somewhat easy. I would literally kiss my teacher's feet right now for how much they prepared me for college, and how their dedication every day to making my education the best possible has helped me succeed.

4. Our bond is inseparable.

Although losing one of our own was more than tragic and rocked our worlds to the core, we bonded together to become stronger than ever in the face of adversity.

5. The same clothes every day meant more time for learning...or sleep.

When I was younger, I'd rush home and take my uniform off as soon as I walked through the door. But now, I think I'd never take it off. It made waking up so much less complicated and all girls meant no makeup, which meant 20 extra minutes to sleep in.

6. So much food. All the time.

Concession stand pretzels, nacho days, pizza days, classroom and advisement parties were only a few of the best kinds of days. Sometimes we even had fundraisers and got chocolate drops or walking tacos during lunch. I'm sorely missing out in college.

7. Open discussions in class.

I've never felt hindered by boys in my classrooms, but in high school, the discussion was free flowing. Whether it be "Hey does anyone have a tampon?" from across the room, or covering touchy subjects in sociology class, we were always allowed to be ourselves.

8. We were able to see our friends for eight hours a day.

I see my friends pretty often in college, but there's nothing quite like being stuck in the same building 24/7. It was a bonus if you had a class together.

9. G-chatting your friends.

I don't know why everyone loved g-mail chat so much, but I constantly logged on just to bother my friends during class or send them stupid things I found while I should've been doing homework.

10. The lifelong bond.

Bear with me while I become corny and reminiscent but looking back on the four years I shared with my lifelong friends, I am forever grateful for the experiences I had. From laughing our faces off to crying together, we did it all together and I'll always be an Ursuline bear.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
