1. The Blue Lagoon is just about the coolest thing ever.
Didn't think you would be needing a bathing suit when traveling to a place with the word "ice" in it? That's where you're wrong! The Blue Lagoon is a large geothermal hot spring that occurred naturally. The geothermal water originates more than 2,000 meters below, where spring water and seawater combine, keeping the water really, really warm (98-104 degrees Fahrenheit). What's better than swimming around with a silica mud mask on drinking an Icelandic smoothie?
2.You can have a **free** layover in Iceland.
Because this incredible country is such a hidden gem, a big promotion is a free layover most airlines offer to those traveling from the US or Canada to Europe. This is a great way to spend even just a few days exploring an amazing place before heading off on your trip! I mean it's free!
3. Icelandic Horses
They're probably the most beautiful horses I've ever seen. And what makes them so amazing is that they are innate the island, and are everywhere. Stumbling upon these horses can be a little difficult, as there are no major tourist attractions for riding horses. When driving down the long, single-lane roads, you have to keep your eyes open for these beauties. Most of the horses belong to the farmers of Iceland, and it can be hard to find a place to pull over on the side of the road to check them out. But let me tell you, there is nothing like coming into contact with these incredible animals.
4. Dunkin' Donuts
I know what you're thinking... Dunkin Donuts? Weird. I know. But as a lover of the Dunkin Donuts' back in America, you have to try an Icelandic Dunkin. For starters, their donuts and sandwiches are so fresh! And you aren't limited to the usual chocolate, vanilla, Boston cream. There are so many flavors! It feels like you're in a bakery!
5. The people
Even spending just a few days there, you can tell the major difference between the uptight New Yorkers' and the Icelandics. Everyone is so patient and friendly (at least the people I met).
6. Geysir
If anything, you should visit Geysir because it practically created the word Geyser. Seeing the hot water spew from the Earth is pretty cool.
7. The Food
If you're looking to try some new and delicious food, head to Iceland! But not to fear, they still have pizza and salads and lots of things that can be deemed "American." But if you're ready for a challenge, you can try the Icelandic delicacies which include both sheep's head and ram testicles...
8. Long Road Trips
Depending on how long you are visiting, you can dare to tackle the Ring Road, which is basically a loop around the island, or you can try the Golden Circle, which is a smaller road trip that will take you to some pretty cool spots. I got the chance to see the Golden Circle, which included national parks, the geysers, waterfalls, and beautiful scenery along the drive!
9. The Northern Lights
Arguably the most beautiful thing you can see, a trip to Iceland would be incomplete without any attempt to see the lights dance in the sky. Although a cloudy night can ruin your chances, there is just about nothing that compares to when you see this incredible array of color.
10. The memories
Maybe this applies to all trips, but there is nothing better than having amazing people to experience such an incredible place with. Even if you can't take a picture of everything, the memories will stay vivid forever (trust me, this place is unforgettable).
