10 Reasons High School Sports Rock
Austin Utsey

For anyone who has ever played a sport in high school, the majority would describe it as an enjoyable and memorable experience, one that they for sure would not regret. For me, high schools sports are something I hold near and dear to my heart. I made so many wonderful friends, learned valuable life lessons, and had a lot of fun playing sports in high school. Playing a high school sport was never even a thought for me; I always knew I would play sports in high school because I was such an active kid growing up. There are many reasons we all look back on our days playing high school soccer, baseball, football, or whatever the sport was with fond memories, but here are a few reasons I think high school sports rock:

1. The Memories

The memories I gained from playing sports are like no other. Whether it was from a great win, tough loss, or just goofing off with teammates, the memories I have from sports are incomparable.

2. Better Grades

My parents, like many others, believed the busier I was with sports, the better my grades would be. I would choose to get my work done in a timely manner and correctly or I would not have the grades to play in the upcoming game. Also, many sports teams had mandatory study hall, in which you were required to study to get those grades even higher!

3. Did someone say free college?

For some people, obviously not everyone, those who really excelled in high school sports received scholarships to continue playing their sport in college.

4. Resume Builder

Even if you weren’t the star athlete at your high school, being on a team is still seen in a positive light when it comes to applying to college.

5. Work Ethic

For me, sports taught me how to work hard if I wanted to achieve a certain goal. To this day, I still use the competitiveness and work ethic I learned through playing sports to keep me driven and lead me to success.

6. Workouts

Now that we have gone off to college, a job, or whatever after high school, most of us can agree we do not workout like we once did when we played sports in high school. Lets just say the “Freshman 15” and the “Dad Bod” are actually real things, something none of us knew about because we were constantly being active because of the sport we were playing.

7. Life Lessons

Playing sports taught me how to win and lose with grace, something that, in my opinion, is very valuable in life later on. Without playing sports growing up and into high school, this would have been a tough lesson to learn later on. It also taught you how to be self-motivated and time management, both of which I am forever thankful for today.

8. Friendships

At the end of the day, some of the friendships I made while playing high school sports are ones that I will forever cherish. During the season, you spent almost every afternoon together; a friendship was bound to come from it. Playing high school sports leads to great friendships, end of story.

9. Coaches

The coaches you have in high school will be some of the greatest mentors for you as you grow not only in the sport, but also as a person. I know personally, my coaches helped shape me into the person I am today and the player I was then.

10. It was fun!

No one can deny that playing a high school sport that they loved wasn’t fun, because it was. We all loved it and most of us probably miss it, and that’s what made playing high school sports so special.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
