10 Reasons Being Single Is Better Than Being In A Relationship
Seth Doyle

So you're single.

You have no Instagram couple pictures, no his/hers pillows, no valentines dinners, or promise rings. So what? You get no anxiety when it comes to what he's thinking about or how she's feeling, no extra money spent, no unnecessary fighting or crying, the ability to talk to whoever you want whenever you want, no attachments, and endless girl time.

I think its fair to say there are perks to being single, ten to be exact.

1. Girls Night is Every Night

Girls trips, spa nights, sleepovers, none of this has to be compromised or given up. Your girlfriends can be your movie dates, dinner dates, or even someone to take home to meet your family. Being single doesn't mean lonely, it just means surrounding yourself with your friends even more.

2. You Shave For You Girl

Not feeling it? It's been a long week, or you're feeling lazy? Then you do you because you've got no one touching your legs complaining about why your legs aren't soft and giving you subtle hints to shave.

3. You Save Holiday And Birthday Money (Treat Yo Self)

There are no monthly anniversaries, extra birthdays, special gifts that you need to spend time preparing for and looking for. No need to pay for her dinner, or taking him to that concert, because you've got no one to spend your money on but you (and your family and friends on occasion.) No monthly anniversaries? How about retail therapy. No celebrating one year? Go take a vacation with your friends.

4. No Dumb Fights, or Wasted Time Being Jealous

There is no fear of your significant other changing their mind, finding someone else, or any unnecessary tears because you're focusing on you. You never have to have the unnecessary anxiety when you're apart, wondering what they're thinking or feeling, or feeling hurt when they cancel plans with you. No extra effort needs to be made, no fear of having a possible heartbreak or experiencing major drama, it's just you and your own problems ninety-nine problems that you got to worry about, and a relationship ain't one.

5. You're Always Miss Independent

Discover more of yourself. Read that book you've always wanted to read, save up money for a trip you've always wanted to go on. Take that job across the country, learn how to manage your life, and work towards your goals knowing that the sky is genuinely the limit.

6. Go On As Many Dates As You Want

Meet as many new people as you want. Have coffee, have good conversation, and work towards figuring out the what type of person you can picture yourself possibly being with one day. But enjoy this, enjoy this feeling of exploration because one day it'll just be you and one another person...forever. So go on that coffee date, go grab dinner, or see a movie, not giving your heart away or investing too much of you, but rather invest some time into conversation with fun new acquaintances.

7. You Get to Focus on You

We've all got issues, so this is your time to focus. Focus on what areas you think need changing, what areas you want to grow in, and make them your goals. You don't have to worry about anyone else, or stress over managing a relationship. Focus on you, focus on your well being, and be the best person you can be for you.

8. You Don't Need A Man When you've got Ben AND Jerry

Let's be honest, ice-cream is a pretty great problem solver. So you can't cry on his shoulder, so he's not there to give you a hug or cuddle up next to. But you can have Ben and Jerry. And not just one kind, but many different flavors. Because Ice-cream won't cheat on you, break your heart, cancel your plans, or cause you distress, Ice-cream is goodness for your soul.

9. Ditch the Phone Whenever You Want

Sometimes we all need a break from our phones or want to get off social media. But if you're in a long distance relationship or any relationship, this isn't always easy to do. But you can. Ditch the cell phone, turn down the volume, delete the app, because you can.

10. No Attachments

No kids, no anniversaries, no extra plans, or compromises that need to be made, you've got no attachments. Nothing holding you back, nothing keeping you from exploring or traveling, so take it all in and make the most of it. Yes, you have responsibilities, you've got work, friends, family, school, and whatever else, but for now, you don't have the additional attachment to a relationship.

For now, its just you, but you're not alone because you have your friends. No one you need to look good for or impress. You've got money you can save, time for yourself and focusing on your own problems. You have your independence, but also the ability to meet new people. You're able to focus on you and what matters most, and if life brings you down you've got your two men Ben and Jerry. You can throw the phone down, or hop on a plane to nowhere because nothing is holding you back.

Relationships are great, but being single has its perks too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
