Finals week, AKA the most stressful time in every college student's life. It seems as though the work keeps piling on, and the time to do it all is quickly waning. The key to staying happy, let alone relatively sane, during studying for finals is to treat yourself to a study break. Actually, treat yourself to lots of them. We stress ourselves out and think that there's no time to take a break, but stepping away from your work to let your mind (and even body) unwind is the perfect way to regain focus and power through finals week. Here are 10 productive study break ideas to help you make the best use of your time:
1. Take a walk
Getting outside and walking for just a few minutes can give you the change of scenery you need to clear your mind, and it's good for your health. It's a win-win.
2. Color
Yes, adult coloring books exist, and yes, you want to invest. Breaking out your old crayons from fifth grade and getting down to business can help you work the creative side of your brain, giving your studious sections a rest.
3. Have a dance party
In your kitchen, in your bedroom, in your underwear, whatever you like. Dance like no one is watching, or even better, dance with a friend. Throw on One Direction's new *FIRE* album and shake all the stress out.
4. Drink a cup of tea or coffee
Sipping on something steamy, like coffee or tea, can help you unwind and relax for a bit. Then when the caffeine kicks in, it's go time.
5. Take an exercise class
You've been wanting to get your groove on in Zumba all semester, but you've always been "too busy." Take an hour to de-stress with other students, and get your blood pumping so you can refocus later. Now you're smart and fit.
6. Watch Netflix
While it may seem counterproductive to watch a movie or TV show instead of studying for finals, allowing yourself one episode of a series you're hooked on after completing work could be awesome motivation.
7. Clean your room
This is a dreaded task for many, but a study break is the perfect time to channel your frustration and really clean your room well so you have the perfect (and great-smelling) place to get your work done.
8. Meditate
This might not be for everyone, but channeling your inner yogi and taking a few moments to regather your thoughts, regain your center, and just breathe can be beneficial to your well-being.
9. Go out to dinner
Just like everyone has to study for finals, everyone has to eat. Gather a few friends and treat yourselves to a nice evening out. Good food and good company can help take your mind off of the projects and papers looming over you.
10. Take a nap
If all else fails, nap it out. Just 10-20 minutes is ideal for a boost in energy and alertness, so hit the sheets and then hit the ground running right when you wake up.
Finals can be frustrating and overwhelming, but allowing yourself to have a little fun or even get some rest is a sure way to keep you from having a frantic, circa-2007-Britney-Spears meltdown. Take a break, or five. You won't regret it. May the odds be ever in your favor this finals week.
