What if Dr. Frankenstein, the Wolf man, Dracula and many more British Literature favorites were interwoven into the story of one women who Is evil incarnate? Penny Dreadful follows the story of Ms. Vanessa Ives, a catholic woman who was born with a darkness in her. The series is scary enough to strike some fear into your heart, but not scary enough to cause nightmares. Which I'm thankful for, considering my light weight status in the realm of horror. From a writers perspective Penny Dreadful is extremely well written. You might suspect that the characters are rather old and tired, but I was still surprised by the writers fresh twist on things. From a Christian's perspective it isn't something you should entertain, because there are very dark themes that aren't particularly great for the soul or the eyes. However, I am a sucker for a good story, so I finished the series in 3 days ( and am not proud of it.) While doing so I was struck by an idea 💡. How ridiculous would it be if you saw any of these characters on a dating site? The characters are so depraved that, the list almost writes itself. So in order from least to greatest, the bachelors and bachelorettes of Penny Dreadful.
1. Dr. Jekyll/Lord Hyde
This master over chemistry is not shy towards persecution and his rage is unmatched. He seeks to bring calm to all of his neurotic patients if only for a few hours. He seeks to prove his validity as a doctor by making an astonishing discovery. He has a level head (sometimes) and sense of loyalty toward his friends that will last all of his days.
2. Hecate Poole
She is technically branded by the devil, but its not by choice. She will kill anyone to protect her beloved and follow them across continents. If you have a blackened soul she encourages you to embrace it and call her tomorrow night.
3. Sir Malcolm Murray
Explorer, ex father, ex husband seeking companionship late in life. He is at fault for the death of his wife and children, but he is willing to look past it, if you are! Sophisticated and fiercely committed to your protection. He enjoys dancing and solving secret mysteries with his beloved. He will kill anything that frightens you- vampires, demons, spiders- anything.
4. Dr. Victor Frankenstein
An accomplished doctor or a quack, who is to say? He comes with 3 undead children, an addiction to narcotics, and an obsession with his work. He's looking for a proper wife to make him happy. If you fit the bill, don't let him reanimate immortal children from corpses of the most recent plague.
5. Brona/ Lily
As the living Broca, she was a prostitute with a immense baggage but as on of Frankenstein's children she runs an avid anti men campaign. To her dying days she will shun all men and embrace her emotional scars. What is she doing here? She is looking to empower broken woman. If u know any, send them over!
6.Dracula
He's a zoologists that belongs among the dust and dark creatures that go bump during the night. He will profess to love you till the end of time (or the end of your time) as long as you don't mind his fangs in your neck.
7. Dorian Grey
Any love from the charming and beautiful Dorian Grey will be passionate, but short lived. He is destined to be unchanging, charming, and utterly sinful till the end of time. He is looking for something new to ease his everlasting boredom. Can you be surprising enough for Dorian Grey?
8.Catriona Hartdegen
Catriona's fencing skills surpass that of a man. Clad in leather to hunt her prey, her red hair is all you see in the night as she slaughters vampires with her knives. She is knowledgeable in all things that pertain to death 💀. Her confidence and ego allow her to out perform men with a delicate grace. Not intimidated? Well, just remember that woman like her are not to be submissive.
9.Vanessa Ives
This Raven haired beauty is prone toward fits of possession by the devil, but when she is lucid she is the epitome of mystery and control. Her intuition is unmatched by anyone and she has an affinity for attracting trouble. She would make a good wife, for she is already the mother to all things evil, so anyone who is interested might want to know a thing or two about exorcism. Her greatest wish is to be accepted and to lead a normal life with a family.
10. Mr. Ethan Chandler (Wolf man)
Ethan is a lethal western cowboy, sharp shooter, and beast who is willing to drop everything and live a simple life with you away from it all. He has a bloody past and a complicated night life, but he also has a very good heart for his heart is heavy for his many slaughtered victims.
