A rainy day may force you to keep all activities to indoors, but that doesn’t mean a day inside has to be as dreary as the weather outside. Staying in for the day gives you the perfect excuse to watch the movies that you’ve been meaning to watch. Here are ten movies that are bound to entertain you on a rainy day.
1. "Lost in Translation"
This heartfelt narrative takes place in Tokyo, Japan, as Bob Harris, an aging movie star, and newlywed Charlotte embark on a unlikely but meaningful friendship. The film touches on hard-hitting subjects such as loneliness and isolation, while developing the compelling and complicated relationship between the two main characters.
2. "Moonrise Kingdom"
On the fictional island of New Penzance, two 12-year-olds fall in love. Suzy, a misunderstood daughter of two emotionally unavailable parents, and Sam, an orphaned boy scout, decide to run away together, but their journey gets interrupted by a fast approaching storm. The adults in their life must work together to find them before disaster strikes. Vibrant color and eccentric characters are trademarks of any Wes Anderson film.
3. "Good Will Hunting"
Written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, this late 90s film tells the story of Will Hunting, a literal genius who works as a janitor at MIT. When he solves an incredibly difficult math problem, he is discovered by Professor Lambeau, who works with him to uncover his true potential. Beautifully crafted dialogue drives the narrative of this quirky tale.
4. "Back to the Future"
This 1980s classic science fiction film is a movie that viewers of all ages can enjoy. The story centers around Marty McFly, a teenager who is transported back in time due to an experiment involving his scientist friend, Doc Brown. Complications arise and Marty must fix the “rip in time” so his parents end up together, or else Marty will cease to exist.
5. "The Truman Show"
Truman Burbank, the film’s protagonist, has no idea that his whole existence is actually taking place on the set of a internationally known, and loved, television show. Truman’s real thoughts, actions and emotions among a “counterfeit” reality narrate the story of his life. The satirical film can be analyzed in a variety of ways, but it’s also just an enjoyable film to watch.
6. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
Yes, this is the second Jim Carrey entry of my list. That’s because this movie, and Jim Carrey, rock. A melody of science fiction and drama, this film details the aftermath of a painful breakup between the two main characters. The movie is visually compelling and shows the audience the complexity of relationships. Warning: you will probably cry watching this movie.
7. "Atonement"
An English drama based on the book by Ian McEwan, the plot of the film takes place over six decades as it narrates the false accusation that tears two lovers apart. Only time will tell if the two can make it back to each other. Again, bring tissues for this one, folks.
8. "Reservoir Dogs"
Quentin Tarantino’s first film, this crime thriller narrates the events leading up to and following after a robbery gone wrong. This film isn’t for the faint of heart, though. If you’ve never watched a Tarantino film, brace yourself.
9. "Almost Famous"
A coming-of-age film about a 15-year-old boy who gets the opportunity of a lifetime when Rolling Stones magazine assigns him to interview an up-and-coming band. The soundtrack, which contains the likes of David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin, is the perfect complement to a film that’s perfect for a music fan.
10. "The Princess Bride"
Quite possibly one of the most “quoteable” movies ever, this film is an excellent choice for a rainy movie day. A fairy tale adventure that takes the audience through a story about a young woman, her true love, and the long journey to their happiness. People that have seen it won’t mind watching it again, and people who have never seen it will be thoroughly satisfied to watch it for the first time.
Enjoy your rainy day!
