I have always loved movies. I've grown up in a family that actively enjoys watching movies together, and from that, we have created so many special memories. Over the years, I have come to find solace in movie-watching, and they have been a comfort for me through cold winter days, sickness, loneliness and sadness. A good movie evokes emotion, and I've learned that, sometimes, losing your mind over a really sad movie is incredibly good medicine. This is in no way a comprehensive list (and I couldn't stop adding to it), but here are some of my favorite movies to ugly cry to:
1. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
This movie gives a dark, raw look at love (and Jim Carrey!) and coping with loss. It is poignant, brilliant, and strange in all of the best ways.
2. Les Miserables
Literally, meaning, "The Miserable Ones," this movie (book, opera...) will rip your soul from your very being and stomp on it. And you will enjoy it. Anne Hathaway is depressingly stunning. Grab 90 boxes of tissues.
3. My Girl
If you're looking for a cry that brings you physical aching, look no further. The words "He can't see without his glasses!" have never evoked so much pain from me, and if you don't know what I mean, find a copy of this movie immediately.
4. Moulin Rouge!
Bollywood-style romance and tragedy set to modern music; it's a beautiful, fun, and painstaking story sure to bring you to your knees through laughter and tears. This is my favorite movie, and it is a roller coaster from start to finish.
5. PS I Love You
If you want to believe in love that prevails even through death, or if you want to drown in your own tears, this beautiful movie will rock your world.
6. Mary and Max
This Australian, claymation film was something my mother and I stumbled upon on Netflix accidentally, and we were not prepared for the whirlwind it took us through. It takes an honest, strange and sadly funny look at mental health, and it will break your heart.
7. Brokeback Mountain
This movie is one of the saddest and most beautiful love stories I have ever seen, and after the death of Heath Ledger, this movie became even more tragic and painful. It tells a story that truly needs to be told, though.
8. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
This movie ruined my life, as I'm sure it did of many girls who were preteens/teenagers when it came out. You get attached to characters, and they are brutally ripped from your grips. Nonetheless, it is an important coming of age story that I'm glad I grew up with.
9. Dead Poet's Society
All I have to do is think, "O captain, my captain!..." and I start to tear up. This movie was easily one of Robin Williams' best and most important films.
10. The Lion King
Disney is never afraid to tackle big topics honestly, and between the loss of Mufasa and Simba's rejection from society, this movie really plucks some heartstrings. Plus, it will always have a special place in my heart for destroying me at such a young age.
11. It's a Wonderful Life
This movie is a sentimental one for me. My family watches it every Christmas Eve. It will always be one of my favorites, and it is the reason you can occasionally catch me crying at the ring of a bell. It's a classic for a reason.
12. Where the Wild Things Are
This movie does an outstanding job elaborating on such a cherished children's book, and I was honestly a little surprised at the emotion it evoked from me the first time I saw it. Grab a warm blanket, some hot chocolate, and get ready to return to your childhood. You'll get weepy eyed at best.
13. Inside Out
This is one of the most wonderfully painful movies I have seen in a long time. If you want to feel some sadness, at least Inside Out will remind you it's okay while you rub those puffy red eyes.
14. Blue Valentine
This is a love story, but it's definitely not a happy one. This has become one of my favorite movies, but it is not going to coddle your inner optimist, that's for sure. You will root for Michele Williams and Ryan Gosling until you just can't anymore.
15. The Green Mile
This one goes out to all you beautiful empaths. You're going to be in agony. Thank you, Stephen King.
16. Juno
Witty and honest, this story of young love, choices, and life will cut you to the core. Ellen Page got her big break in this film, and she steals the show, just as her spunky Juno will steal your heart.
17. The Sixth Sense
This movie is probably best known for the major twist and its creepiness, but between the love story that's intertwined, the relationship between a mother and a son, and the rawness in the way it addresses loss makes it one that I couldn't leave off the list.
18. Titanic
Okay, now you know I had to put this one on here. RIP Jack.
19. Boy in the Striped Pajamas
This is easily one of the saddest movies on this list. I'll warn you, it's about the Holocaust.
20. The Notebook
Thanks to our good ol' boy Nick Sparks, this novel turned chick flick won over hearts, wrought sobs, and became an instant sappy classic. Let Noah and Allie help you believe in love again.
21. Armageddon
Aerosmith, space, love lost; what else do you need from a tear-jerker?
22. The Fox and the Hound
This 70s Disney movie makes me sob uncontrollably from start to finish. Friendship is beautiful, and life sucks.
23. Interstellar
Space movies are sad, man. I was skeptical about this movie, but it proved to hold up against many of my favorite cry-inducing flicks.
24. Forrest Gump
This movie will warm your heart, and warm your heart, and then set your heart on fire and use your tears to put out said fire. Experience life, love, loss, and adventure with our sweet but simple protagonist Forrest.
25. Old Yeller
Or any movie with a dog, for that matter. This movie has been scarring children for decades. I'm sure you can guess how it ends if you somehow don't already know. Go give your pup a hug.
26. Step Mom
Families are complicated, and this movie portrays that so perfectly. If you have step parents, you may find this one especially gets to you.
27. Pollyanna
You'll learn to play the glad game, crave steak and ice cream for dinner, and see the best in every person around you...all before your world comes crashing down.
28. Steel Magnolias
No one puts a heart wrenching twist on life like Southerners. Get ready to laugh and cry until it hurts.
29. The Bridge to Terabithia
I have no words to say about how absolutely, horrendously, wonderfully sad this movie is. Just be prepared to cry. A lot. A LOT.
30. The Fault in Our Stars
This movie is based on the now famous "cancer book" by beloved YA author John Green. I left the theater soaked in tears. Like, I needed to change shirts. It's painful.
