To see where your favorite movie to watch constantly stacks up, check out this list of the Top Ten Re-Watchable movies of all-time.
10. "Mean Girls" (2004)
Among all the teenage comedies that have come out in recent memory, nothing compares to “Mean Girls”. Every single character in this movie is beloved and can be identified by the average person when shown a picture and every one of their lines is remembered. Say “fetch” to anyone on the street and they’ll surely know what you’re talking about. It’s not a conventional teen-movie; it’s smart, hilarious and so memorable that even today it still can be found playing on ABC Family, or “Freeform” as they are now called, almost every other week, and for good reason. It’s pure gold.
9. "Toy Story" (1995)
What better way to introduce oneself to the world than with one of the best movies ever made and have it be the first fully computer-animated movie? There just really isn’t, and that’s exactly what Pixar did. “Toy Story” is one of the most memorable movies with its revolutionary animation and wonderful cast of characters including Woody, Buzz, Hamm, Rex, Slinky, Mr. Potato Head, Bo Peep, Andy, and the devious Sid. Every character has their own fleshed-out personalities, while along with a wonderful story and humor appropriate for all ages it makes for a wonderful film that makes every kid and adult “reach for the sky.”
8. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
So far in the 21st century, no one has made a bigger impact in the comedy world than Will Ferrell. He’s starred in hilarious movies such as: “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “The Campaign,” “The Other Guys,” and “Elf.” However none of these films can quite compare to his crowning jewel, “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” It is everything an entertaining comedy should be. It has an entertaining story that has a serious plot of diversity but it is so outrageous that we can laugh about how ridiculous it is that such an issue exists. The cast is filled with exaggerated characters that blurt out memorably hilarious lines that leave us in stitches every time. Like, “Mean Girls,” Anchorman is filled with memorable dialogue that you can’t help but recite and anytime it comes on TV you know you’re going to watch it.
7. "The Lion King" (1994)
“The Lion King,” is one of the finest movies to come out the Disney Renaissance of the 90’s, not to mention, one of the best movies to come out in the 90’s in general. Every kid was obsessed with this movie, dragging their parents to the theater to see it and when it came out on VHS, kids would watch it over-and-over again. Parents of these children didn’t mind at all because they were just as enchanted as their children. It’s humor and story mixes so well that you have try and not smile while watching. It’s another classic from Disney that will be cherished for a long time and will always have a place in our hearts.
6. National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978)
This is the movie that your parents will say is one of the funniest movies of all time and is better than any comedy out today. There’s actually some truth to that. Animal House is a comedy synonymous with National Lampoon, their humor is so outrageous, and vulgar that anyone watching can’t help but laugh. It also helps that the late great John Belushi was a laugh riot and that everything that crept out of his mouth, and every action leaves you in stitches. The story of a fraternity sticking up to their dean whose authority challenges their fun is such a relatable plot and one that has been mimicked since with such notables as “Old School” but not to the same avail. Every college frat boy will want to mimic what they see which is the ultimate flattery, as they wish to be entrapped in the Animal House world. Of course they will have to practice some discretion.
5. The Breakfast Club (1985)
“The Breakfast Club” is one of many John Hughes films to come out of the 80’s. Movies such as “Sixteen Candles,” “Weird Science,” “Planes, Trains & Automobiles,” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” have all been regarded as quintessential 80’s movies along with Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club.” However, out of all of Hughes’ films, “The Breakfast Club” has been the most impactful in its treatment of angst, anxiety, stress, and pressure of teenagers in High School that is all too real. It exemplifies perfectly just how teenagers feel in high school and is so relatable that people of all generations have fallen in love with the movie. It’s not too serious that it doesn’t make room for humor and because of this people can’t get enough and want to re-watch it whenever it comes on TV.
4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
If you want to talk about humor this is the, dare I say, the Holy Grail! Some of the funniest people of all time, those of the Monty Python troupe, created arguably the funniest movie of all time in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” From the Knights who say “Ni,” to the “bring out your dead" guy, to the imaginary horses who are only made audible by the knight’s squire who bangs to coconuts together, there’s a seemingly endless amount of gags and hilarity to keep you laughing the entire time. Special screenings are held throughout the US that re-shows the Holy Grail proving its re-watch-ability. Monty Python’s humor is still beloved today and there’s no better showcase of said humor than in the Holy Grail.
3. The Star Wars Trilogy (1977-1983)
I’m cheating on this entry but for very good reason, it’s Star Wars. No one can watch just one episode of the trilogy without watching the rest. The space opera flows so smoothly that it’s impossible to resist watching the entire trilogy. To this day Star Wars is re-released on DVD, and replayed in theaters across the country because people adore these movies so much. There’s nothing to point out in particular about these movies because it’s just that great and I mean it hasn’t developed a cult following for nothing.
2. Goodfellas (1990)
Martin Scorsese has developed an incredible filming style that has captivated audiences for decades with hits from “Taxi Driver” stretching to the recent “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Scorsese’s mixture of violence, suspense, humor, and realism that fans adore is best showcased in one of his finest films, “Goodfellas.” Goodfellas is from start to finish, a captivating film that you can’t keep your eyes off of. It’s filled with some of the best dialogue and the most memorable of characters in Joe Pesci’s, Tommy Devito, who is arguably the greatest character that Scorsese has put to screen. Everyone from their father to their grandmother loves this movie. Going to a family gathering you’re bound to see this playing on the TV and you’ll want to slip away from your annoying aunt to watch it. It can convince the most honest person to think that being bad can be so so good and make anyone want to hang out with these based-off-a-true-story characters.
1. Forrest Gump (1994)
Don’t kid yourself; you’ve seen this movie at least three times before. Forrest Gump has one of the purest messages in its core, that if you’re honest, respectable, and good, you will find your Jenny and make it in America and it doesn’t matter how dumb you are. Now that is a theme that everyone can get behind. This film is memorable with its titular character played perfectly by Tom Hanks, and all of his sayings. “Mama said, life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get,” “Sometimes there are just not enough rocks,” “Run Forrest, run!” It’s all so simple but so good. Not to mention the soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks put together for any movie. It is just a feel good movie that you can’t get tired off, and works to cure any boredom and can be usually found on TV somewhere on any night. I myself have seen it at least 20 times but I am definitely not alone in that department.
