Welcome to the best four years of your life. When I started college last year, there was no one I could turn to for advice. I had no idea about the ins and outs of college. So, through my own personal trail and error, here are the top ten mistakes you may make your freshman year.
1. Not studying.
Honestly, it is pretty simple. If you do not study then...
2. Being disorganized.
Do yourself a favor and organize your life. College can get pretty hectic pretty fast. Stay on top of things by keeping organized.
3. Never getting to know your roommates.
I lived one semester in a suite style dorm with seven (yes seven) other roommates. I got to know the ones who lived near me pretty well, but I never got to know the girls who lived on the other half of the suite. Who knows, maybe I missed out on meeting my future best friend.
4. Buying your textbooks.
If it is not absolutely necessary for your class, I would never recommend buying a textbook. Unless you have a couple hundred bucks to spare, it is a waste. Renting is a much better option.
5. Not cleaning up after yourself.
You do not want to be known as that one roommate who lives like an animal. Make sure you keep any and all shared spaces neat and tidy. Your roommates will be very grateful for this.
6. Not staying involved.
We all start out with the greatest of intentions. We go to welcome events, sign up for clubs, and maybe even show up to an introductory meeting or two. But as the semester goes on, we do not stick with our commitments. The only thing worse than not staying involved is...
7. Not getting involved.
There are so many activities to participate in while in college. Whether you are into academics, the arts, politics, sports, or gaming does not really matter. There is a club out there that will suit your interests.
8. Not prioritizing correctly.
Procrastination is a big no-no in college. The time you waste by not doing an assignment will come back to bite you when the work starts to pile up.
9. Overusing social media.
At some point during the year, you will log on to either Facebook or Instagram and see that your old high school friends are (seemingly) having more fun than you are. Rather than feel left out, take a break from social media and enjoy your own experience.
10. Having regrets.
This time in your life will not last forever. This is not the time to hold yourself back and have regrets. Let loose and live a little.
