As we near the end of another school year and the start of summer break, jobs and internships are a hot topic of conversation among college students.
Do you have an internship lined up?
What are you doing after graduation?
Have you been applying like crazy?
The process of finding jobs and applying to those jobs is a full time job in itself. Throw in interview preparation and the interviews themselves and the job hunt can consume all of your out-of-classroom time.
To try to make the process a little easier for the future and for other students, I compiled some interview questions I was asked during my internship search for the summer of 2016:
1. What are two of your strengths and two of your weaknesses?
This really caught me off guard. How am I supposed to talk to an employer about my weaknesses? I felt extremely vulnerable and probably sounded frantic over the phone during the interview when I was faced with this question. Before an interview it is always a good idea to have a list of some strengths you want to highlight and some weaknesses you truly want to work on. You can never be too self-aware.
2. What are your biggest, wildest aspirations?
"I want to travel the world," said every millennial ever. I was not prepared for this question as it had nothing to do with my professional goals. It's important to keep your personal goals and passions in mind when preparing for an interview. You may blow the socks off the interviewer with a crazy goal or dream you have!
3. You had the best day at work ever. What did you do?
For some reason I loved this question. It automatically put me in a great mood and I found myself smiling while I pictured myself going through a fantastic theoretical work day. This question shows what a person values in the workplace as well as what they value personally.
4. Give an example of when you successfully utilized technology.
Technology is a major component of almost every job. As a young job seeker it is important to not only utilize technology, but stay on top of the latest technological trends and advancements. Mashable is a great source that I frequently check for tech news and tips.
5. What do we do here at (xyz) company? But really... what do we actually do?
Do your research people. It is so easy for employers to tell when you truly don't have a clue what they actually do. Do a search that goes beyond the homepage of their website or the "about us" page. Look up articles and customer reviews to truly get a grasp of what the company does.
6. Why do you want to work for us?
This question also tests whether or not a candidate has done their research. Before the interview try to find qualities about the company that you admire. Answering this question with a genuine answer will likely make an impact on your interviewer.
7. How would you describe your writing voice?
This question came up a couple times for me as I was mainly applying for marketing/communication internships. Even if your field doesn't involve writing, it is important to have a grasp on your personal brand or voice. Are you serious or more witty? Being self-aware will help you in answering tricky questions.
8. Tell me how you normally operate in a group.
This goes back to those self-awareness questions. Are you the organizer or are you the idea formulator? Group work is a huge part of how companies operate so it is important to understand your role in a group setting.
9. Why did you decide to major in (xyz)?
"Because it seemed easy" is not a good answer. Truly think about why you chose to devote four years of your life to a certain subject. Where do your personal strengths align with that major?
10. What questions do you have for me?
It is always a good idea to have some questions to ask the interviewer prepared. You can ask about their role at the company or about the role you are applying for. Ask about their experience and what they enjoy about the job. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the company from a personal perspective.
