Most freshman, whether they admit it or not, will experience being homesick at least once. At first, I was happy to leave home and move onto the new experience that is college. Now that I'm here, there are 10 reasons why I miss home.
- Your own room
Don’t get me wrong, I love my roommate, but there's nothing like having your own space to go home to after a long day. Being able to study, watch TV, stay up late and do whatever you want any time you want is the best thing about having your own room. - Normal bathrooms
The horror of freshman year starts and ends with communal dorm bathrooms. Although sharing a bathroom with 30 other girls seems like so much fun… we all can agree that our own toilet, shower and sink is one of the best things about going home. - Parents
My parents are definitely one of the main reasons why I miss home (and I'm sure many people can relate to this). Growing up, my mom and dad were my rock, my shoulder to cry on and my best friends. They were always there when I was upset or to reassure me when I had doubts about myself. Not to mention that your mom is your number one person to gossip to because she can always keep a secret. - Home cooked meals
I never really believed people who said “in college all you eat is ramen noodles and easy mac”… but after my month and a half here, I’m sad to admit that they were right. Easy mac, microwaveable soup and late night runs to the dining hall are always great, but there's nothing like a home cooked meal. In my first month of college, I cannot say that I had more than one good meal. This not only sucks, but it can be unhealthy. - Your dog
-or any pet that will cuddle up and make you feel better after you fail a calc exam. Sometimes, I miss my dog more than my siblings (sorry guys). Dogs are the best form of comfort, love, and they will never be mean to you. …If only dorms would allow dogs to come visit for the night! - Friends
We all dreaded that first month of school where we literally knew nobody but our roommates. Going to a huge school like Wisconsin it’s easy to meet people you can party hop with in those large stereotypical freshman groups, but meeting friends that you can go to the library with is hard to do at first. At home it was so easy to meet friends in a class of 350 because you knew almost everybody. Now, college is a different story with almost 8,000 in the freshman class alone. - Boyfriends
I know this may not apply to everyone, but for me one of the reasons I miss home is because of my boyfriend. I miss those nights where we could hangout after school and not have much homework, instead, now I spend almost every week night at the library. And for most of us, college entails long distance relationships… and those just suck. - Cars
Most college kids do not have a car to drive from class to class- not like anyone would want to either. Plus, parking prices are through the roof in Madison and nobody wants to pay that ON TOP of college tuition. At home, I was able to drive everywhere and, for the lazy ones, it's the best! Walking up Bascom Hill or to a lecture in Agricultural Hall definitely makes me miss my car. - Care-free spending
I will admit, before college I spent ALL my money- that was the little amount I made from my job hosting at a local restaurant. Whether it was the mall, lunch dates with my friends, or Starbucks runs, my money went so fast. Being in college has really taught me to appreciate every penny I have, even if that means eliminating Starbucks from my life. - Your hometown
Whether you came from a small city, or a large urban area, no place is better than your hometown. Coming from a small town in Wisconsin, going to school in a city like Madison is a HUGE change for me. Whether you hated your hometown or cried about leaving it, there’s really no place like home.
