7 Ways To Live Healthier This Summer

It's always a good time to start living healthier.

I know that my family and I are taking steps to live a healthier lifestyle this summer and I think that everyone should make this summer one of change. I'm going to lay out some simple ways to start moving towards a healthy lifestyle.

1. Drink More Water

I myself, am super guilty of neglecting my body's need for water. It is really difficult for me to drink as much water as the Mayo Clinic recommends which is 11.5 cups per day for women and 15.5 cups for men.

Although that number seems unachievable, it doesn't hurt to try my best. Get a cute water bottle (like a hydro flask) to bring with you throughout your day and try to drink about one cup of water each hour.

2. Find New Ways To Work Out

There are so many different ways to get active! You don't even have to join a gym to start your fitness journey. Walk your dog or run laps around a local park, go for a swim, play tennis with a friend, do body-weight exercises at home, etc. The possibilities are endless! Just get your body moving!

3. Get A Fitness Tracker

I think that fitness trackers are so motivating for people trying to live a healthier lifestyle. I personally have an Apple watch that I use to track my steps, calories burned, exercises, etc.

I don't think that everyone needs to spend the money on an Apple watch because they are rather pricey, but there are tons of less expensive alternative fitness trackers on Amazon.

4. Eat More Whole Foods

Avoid processed foods as much as you can and try eating whole foods instead! On your next trip to the grocery store, pick up some fruits and veggies to snack on during the day or to use for meals. I promise you will feel so much more energized after eating fresh fruit than a bag of potato chips!

5. Track Your Food Intake

When I say track your food, I don't mean you necessarily have to count calories and be super strict on what amount you can eat.

I think it is helpful to see exactly what you are eating in a day to reflect on what you need to work on. I know that I need to work on eating fewer carbohydrates. I use the app MyPlate but have also used Lifesum and they are both great meal trackers.

6. Get Outside

Soaking in some rays can be a great thing for your mind and body. It's summer and the weather is nice; don't waste it! Sitting inside watching tv all day is not healthy. Go out and get some fresh air!

7. Have An Accountability Partner

This is a VERY important step towards living a healthier lifestyle. You need a friend, family member, significant other, or whomever you choose to hold you accountable for working for your goals.

If no one is supporting you or checking in on you, it is a lot more difficult to achieve success. Also, having a friend to do activities with or cook with is really fun!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
