During spring break, I had the chance to see "Zootopia," the latest Disney animated film that really is more than a film about animals. Just like most Disney films, it gives away a message that is relatable not only to the kids, but also relatable to the adults that may be watching this film.
The movie tells the story of Judy Hopps, a bunny who does whatever she can to make her dream become a reality. That dream is to become a police officer for the city of Zootopia and she does work hard to become an officer who lives in the city. However, she starts out as not a cop on the patrols, but as someone who is in charge of parking duty. Judy overhears about a case of numerous animals having gone missing from the city and she volunteers herself to help out with the case.
Judy meets Nick Wilde, a sly fox who doesn't seem very nice and gives away a lot of free will judgment. It seems that he starts out as a person who goes along with stereotypes that other animals may say when they see a bunny like Judy. This changes a lot of things when Judy and Nick team up together in order to solve the case with only 48 hours to do so.
Being a Disney movie, I knew that it would set up the standards, but there were a few things that occurred in the film that made me laugh and think. One part was when a character was selling movies on a street corner and the films were various Disney films with animal-like titles. There were Disney films of the past ("Big Hero 6," "Tangled," "Wreck It Ralph") and the films that are coming on our way ("Moana," "Gigantic," "Frozen 2"). I thought that that was a 4th wall demolition because it shows that the film is really self aware of the amount of films that they have released and they are going to be releasing in the future.
Another part that I found myself laughing about was when the main characters make a stop at the DMV and it is shown that the workers are sloths. The thought of having such a slow animal doing tasks at a DMV made me feel like it would be like most DMVs nowadays: having most of the employees be slow most of the time.
The lesson of the story stood out to me as this: no matter who you are or what you do, you have the capability to do what you want to do and you can show anyone standing in your way that you are able to make anything happen. There were some things that made me think that this is completely relevant to the society that we live in. With people going along with the stereotypes and telling others to just go with the flow of what others are dong, it shows that it's okay to stand out and follow your heart's desire.
This is Disney's 55th animated feature film and it has made a spot of my top 10 Disney films that I have seen. If you haven't seen this film, I suggest that you do because I think that there is something for everyone to enjoy in this movie. Now after seeing this movie, I think I want to get a Judy Hopps and a Nick Wilde plushie because they are just two awesome characters that create a real dynamic duo. Disney has blown me away once again with the amount of work that was done to make this film possible and I can't wait to see what films they have to show us in the future.
