YouTuber Spotlight: Kalyn Nicholson

Growing up as an internet kid meant spending countless hours on numerous websites--Neopets, Webkinz and Club Penguin were my personal favorites. Unfortunately, these favorite websites that helped pass time became less fun as I grew older. Thankfully, in 2005 the internet graced us internet kids with a new and glorious website, YouTube. Watching my favorite Vloggers has become a part of my daily routine. Some people binge watch Netflix. I binge watch YouTube. For my fellow YouTube watchers, I would like to share with you a girl that has inspired me time and time again, Kalyn Nicholson.

Kalyn Nicholson is a Vlogger that posts videos classified by viewers as "lifestyle.” Some specific examples of the content she posts include DIY projects, fashion Lookbooks and inspirational videos. In addition to her YouTube channel, she has other social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr. She even has her very own blog.

Some of my very favorite videos can be found below.

I am a lover of tie-dye and galaxy patterns, so this video is straight up my alley. I love art and DIY projects. Whenever I feel a sort of "writer's block" but instead "crafters block" I go straight to YouTube for ideas. When I go to a store and find something cute my first thought is that I can make that myself. I just love handmade things.

Typically a new Lookbook video is posted each season. She also posts pictures of her outfits on her blogs. On her blog, she includes where she has purchased each item in her outfit and provides links to similar products online. I find a lot of my style inspiration from these videos. Even though I do not own similar fashion pieces, I like to pretend that I would look just like her if I tried.

This video is an example of her inspirational videos. Although very simple, in these types of videos she often just sits and talks to the camera. I love them because I feel like I am just talking with one of my friends. What makes this video unique against the rest of her videos in this category is that she is not just sitting and talking to the camera. While watching the video, it feels as if you are going on an adventure with her. Feeling like you are actually there with her while she talks has such a soothing effect.

Unlike some popular figures on the internet, she is not afraid to be herself. Every video she publishes to her channel shows how down to earth and quirky she is. I admire how real she portrays herself to be despite having so many eyes that could be watching every move she makes. The variety of content on her channel has helped me realize that it is okay to be who I want to be regardless of who is watching. Through these videos I have learned a lot about myself because of how many similarities I have found between the two of us. Even though I may never meet this girl, she has made one of the largest impacts on my life.

Kalyn Nicholson is one of my absolute favorite YouTubers that I have discovered. I eagerly await for her to post a new video on YouTube each and every week. I encourage you all to check out her channel. The video below is a great introduction to the realm of YouTube that I have fallen in love with.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
