It’s that time of the year again. The GOP and Democratic debates are in full swings and are taking over the country via all forms of social media. Open your app and one side you see young men and women loving what’s going on. Tweeting about their opinions and arguing back and forth and that’s great. The youth is getting involved.
On the other side of the spectrum you see youth arguing about what’s going on but not giving the political war going on a little thought at all and that’s an issue. You have people who want to voice their opinion which everyone is free to do and should do, but they are doing so uneducated. The youth of America should care more about the current political race because it will affect them tremendously but sadly a large percentage just don’t want to.
Civyouth.org provided a state stating that in the 2012 election only 48% of people between the ages of 18 and 29 and in the 2014 elections only 19.9%. These stats are alarming. To put that into a perspective imagine if in 2014 you had 100 people complaining about the people running for a political spot and that only 20 of them would vote and do something about it. Day by day more and more youth becoming less interested and who runs our country. When the leaders in the government are becoming older the voters are not becoming younger like it should be.
This year, the man that has taken the most heat is probably Donald Trump. Young people, including myself, have taken shots at Mr. Trump. He’s made comments day after day that have really upset a lot of Americans, especially people of color and understandably so. You as a person are free to dislike him but if you’re going to dislike him then do it in the right context. There is no stat to prove this but I’m willing to say that Trump has had the most quotes taken out of context. If you don’t want him to be elected then it’s your job to go vote against him.
The point here is simple. People between the ages of 18 to 25 will be running the country soon. They are going to graduating college, starting their careers and businesses, and wanting to improve what’s going on around them. They will need to be making the big decisions but won’t be able to. Once they are at an age that the government will really affect them they will be being led by people who do not share their interests because they let all their parents vote over them. If you don’t agree with your mom on abortion topics and you let her vote opposite against you and you choose not to vote then how can you complain?
The youth of America needs to step up in a time of where they can make a change. In a world of social media and quick communication your voice can be heard more than ever but it doesn’t matter if you don’t vote. Evert vote does matter so register, inform yourself, watch debates, and vote. Speak your mind and make the country a place you want to raise your future family in.
