Take Yourself to The Next Level

Take Yourself to The Next Level
Nicholas Duke

Take a moment to look around at your life. Ask yourself these questions, take a moment to focus on yourself. You deserve a moment or two to take in what your life is like at this moment and look to the future. Sometimes we need to redirect our paths if we have fallen a bit off track, and that is OK. You could need to make a whole new plan for yourself or just adjust some of the things you do in your daily life to make your life the best it can be. So open the bottle of wine you've been saving, pour yourself a nice BIG glass, get comfy and ask yourself the following questions.

List your strengths. Don't be shy! When you think you are done, add another one.

List your weaknesses. Be honest, but not overly-critical. Pick one or two weaknesses and find a way to address those weaknesses.

Define "happiness." Are you happy with your life right now? Why? Or why not? Are there changes you can make in your life to make you happier?

Do you consider yourself a healthy person, physically and emotionally? Explain.

List five things you are grateful for.

What does it mean to "Live in the present moment"? Do you usually live in the present, past or future?

Are you doing what you believe in? Or are you settling for what you are doing? Explain.

What do you fear the most in life right now? Why?

How do you relax? Note how you feel after you relax. Do you need to relax more often?

What is something you do differently than most people?

Who has had the best positive influence in your life? Why?

Name one thing that has always fascinated you. Why does it fascinate you?

When do you feel the most angry, stressed or frustrated? What is it about those situations that makes you feel that way?

Describe the physical and emotional symptoms that occur after/during a stressful event.

Are you holding in any guilt or anger? Who is it toward? What can you do to release some of the guilt or anger? Explain.

When you feel angry do you normally "Fight" or "Flight"?

What would you do differently if you knew no one could see or judge you?

List three things you LOVE to do. When was the last time you did those things?

Is your pride and/or ego getting in the way of anything in your life?

Do you think having gratitude makes you a happier person? Why or why not?

If you had to choose 3 words to describe who you want to be what would those 3 words be?

If money wasn't an issue what would a normal day look like for you?

How does forgiving someone else make YOU feel better?

If you could accomplish only ONE thing during the rest of your life, what would it be?

When are you most naturally yourself? What people, places, activities make you feel the most yourself?

Hopefully sitting down and taking some time to ask yourself some questions about your life opens your eyes to things that you can easily change and those that you may overlook on a daily basis and can be even more grateful for now. Never be afraid to be authentically you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
