As I scrolled through my Facebook timeline newsfeed recently, I noticed posts from family and friends about the excessive cost of education. I've read posts from people who believe private education should be free because public schools that are funded by the government are not offering proper education or a proper environment for students. Since Bernie Sanders offered the idea of free college education, more people have been pushing for it.
What many people are finding hard to understand is that nothing is free. If college would be free to the student, taxpayers would then absorb the cost. I do not understand why people get the idea that they're entitled to so many things in this world.
Here's a newsflash: The world owes you nothing. If you want something, you have to work for it.
I grew up in a household with two parents who worked. They did absolutely everything to provide for my siblings and me. They didn't complain; they just worked. They sacrificed and struggled to provide us with the opportunity to have a private education.
My parents taught me to work hard for what I want. Through their example, I learned that it was up to me. I wasn't entitled to a single thing.
I chose to go to college, and I know I'm going to be in serious debt. But I know I am going to work hard to pay it off. I give myself goals to achieve so I have a standard to meet.
I am 21 years old and I'm spending my summer down the shore, but it's not a vacation. I'm working two jobs. When I return to school in August, I will continue to work my summer jobs on weekends. I will go back to my weekday job that I've had since freshman year, and I will begin an internship in addition to being a full-time student.
I have never once felt that I should be entitled to anything, nor have I ever felt that anyone owed me anything. I consistently work hard and as much as I want to have fun or do things for myself. Sometimes I have to turn down those opportunities because I have other responsibilities.
Individuals need to stop thinking that they're entitled to everything and start working toward goals they want to achieve. Sometimes you may have to say no to the night out, or to the vacation, or that new outfit. Working hard for what you have makes it so much more worth it than just having it handed to you.
Many people need to learn to empower themselves and those around them through hard work.
Our lives should be about empowering ourselves and others, not complaining until we get what we think we're entitled to.
