To our younger brothers/sisters graduating high school,
I guess there’s no other way to put this, but you have no idea how weird it feels that you are in college. It seems like just yesterday we were in the hospital anxiously waiting for you to come, or outside playing together or just doing about anything that an older sibling would do with their younger sibling. But, we never saw this day coming, after all you are still kids compared to us. It doesn’t matter if you’re two years younger or ten years younger, you’re all still our baby brothers or sisters.
So far each and every single one of you that will be walking that stage in a few weeks has taken that a step that many people haven’t before or were never given the opportunity to. After you walk off that stage, (speaking on behalf of all older siblings out there), welcome to the real world. Sure it’s a scary thought, trust me, we all thought the same thing.
Whatever you choose to do, work, travel, school anything, as big brothers or big sisters we will always be there to help. You may not think so through our constant fights or constant arguments, but as much as we hate to admit it when you were born, you were our one true friend.
For the years that we spent as only children many of us longed to have siblings, but once you were born there was this concept of sharing that many of us never got around. I remember I would hide all my toys from you, but after we went to college we longed for that sharing experience.
For us to go to college it isn’t bad, because we know you’ll be at home when we get back, but this time around, you’ll be gone. From our fights to hiding toys to sneaking out of the house when our parents weren’t there to throwing parties to doing all sorts of mischievous things, there is no one else I would have rather done it with and I am for certain I can say that for older siblings reading this.
So college, literally did not picture this day to come. It seems as if it’s always the older siblings job to go off and leave home and do whatever, but for now that’s not the case. Right now you’re leaving one school just to enter into another. But, don’t think of it like that. Think of it as the real world. You’ll be on your own, you’ll have to live with lots of people that you love and some you hate, you’ll have good relationships and you’ll have bad relationships, you will love your classes and you’ll have classes that would rather sleep in for. As sappy as this sounds, college isn’t an easy road, you’ll struggle but you’re meant to struggle. Essentially what I am getting to is that, you’ll love it and you’ll hate it, but the reason we went away before you is to offer our guidance. We’ll always be there for you.
Sincerely,
Your older brothers and sisters
