It's not uncommon for college students to change their degree at least three times before they settle on a degree that fits them. However, there's always the added pressure that society looks down on a handful of degrees because they're too easy or only for women or it's a toilet paper degree. Women can be a scientist, doctors, engineers and still love makeup or Doctor Who or dressing like they're from the cast of Mean Girls. In the season premiere of The Big Bang Theory, Bernadette is a microbiologist, who points out to her friend Amy, that because she's a petite and blond woman with a high pitch voice, no one takes her seriously as her male coworkers. On the other spectrum, men are allowed to be dancers, artists, nurses, or anything artistic. It's 2016, society is bringing into light American ignorance towards sexism, racism, sexual orientation, police brutality, religion preference and rape. Society keeps saying that it's rude to say "he's acting like a girl" or "she's just being emotional" so why can't stop the discrimination towards college degrees?
It is true that some degrees are paid less than others, but if you're spending thousands of dollars for an education, shouldn't you be allowed to find the degree that fits you, regardless of the easiness. You're allowed to change your degree thousands of times until you find something that you're good at. We shouldn't make students feel like they wasted a lot of money because you have a negative view towards a specific major. Everyone can't be a doctor, lawyer, scientist, artist, and so on, we all have different talents.
So freshmen and continuing college students if you're not happy with your degree to keep looking for another one, don't let someone choose your degree for you.
These are the areas of study that are usually picked on the most:
Art
It's true that you might not get the big bucks in this area, but just imagine restaurants, hotels, airports and your home without any paintings. How weird would it be to see nothing on the walls? Or what about those fantastic ceramic bowls, plates, cups and jewelry holders, would you just want plastic containers? Art majors have made many different objects that you probably have in your house.
Communications
Alright, this one hits home because I graduated with this degree. People tend to think this is the easiest degree ever and that we just smoke weed all the time. Not true! We are journalists, filmmakers, audio tech, photojournalists, public speakers, public relation and marketers. If you take us out of the picture you would not have movies or tv shows, the news, newspapers, magazines, BuzzFeed or Odyssey, or the radio. You wouldn't be able to advertise for anything, have someone represent you or have someone solve your public appearance. Don't hate on us, all you would have left would be by word of mouth (and that goes over well) and books.
Dance/Theater
Is the Nutcracker apart of your Christmas tradition? Have you been craving to see The Lion King or Hamilton on Broadway? Do you love watching your favorite actor in movies? Well if society keeps knocking down this degree or not providing money for schools all of our movies will become terrible, no one would be able to express themselves and all of those outfits we wish we could pull off would never happen.
English/Humanities
These areas of study aren't the same, but they're similar. English majors study writing and analyzing literature -- if people stopped studying this degree, who would teach our children how to write? It's true that there aren't many options for English majors, but it makes their resume look good because employers know that they can write well. For humanities, they study a little bit of everything and yes, sometimes they can become super annoying and pretentious but let's be honest these are the people become doctors, lawyers, writers, or literally anything. This degree allows them to see the world -- they're probably the most diverse group of people because they study a problem from everyone's point of view.
Graphic Design
Graphic designers literally design everything from menus, posters, labels, postcards to websites and fonts. They study how to get people's attention by art. They're a mix of art and marketing. If you've ever saved a bag with a quote on it or a postcard or poster it's most likely been designed by a graphic designer. Books would be boring, movies would be boring, you're life would be boring.
Languages
For those of us who love to travel and talk to those who have immigrated to our country, wouldn't it be awesome to actually understand what they're saying? Wouldn't you love to be cultured and know another language? These people study languages to become translators and teachers. They also help create new languages from movies or tv shows, like Game of Thrones.
Music
If you want to be a classical singer, instrument player or an opera singer, it becomes a little harder to get a job but the moment you did it would pay off so well. Broadway plays need a live band to accompany them. Some singer/songwriters actually studied music in college and now they're famous. Music majors can go on to design soundtracks, like Hans Zimmer, or even just to produce music for commercials. However, if you take music out of your life what would you have?
Philosophy/Psychology
People tend to believe that these majors are just useless degrees because who needs someone to teach you to think. You'd be surprised. Philosophers can go onto to become lawyers (you don't always have to study history) or teachers and help broaden minds to Copernicus, Sir Issac Newton, Artistole and many more of the brilliant minds that have shaped school and the basis of o technology and everything we have in 2016. Psychologists provide insight into our internal self. You need someone to talk to, they are there and will be able to help you discover what's making you depressed or anxious. Forensic psychologists help law enforcement trying to find criminals from mass murderers to serial killers.
Religion
Whether if you're religious or not, some people believe in the power of a higher being and they need people to look up to. There's always a calling for leaders in churches, to be missionaries in foreign lands, to provide counseling for those in need.
Social Work
These people are superheroes, they help children find safe homes, work with the disabled, and work with the homeless. They are genuinely concerned about the well-being of society -- like we all should, but they devote themselves to trying to change someone's life every day.
Don't judge people by their majors, they may end up making or breaking your career.
