You Know You Are From Venezuela If...

If you are Venezuelan, you know your love for this country is unconditional. After all, you are who you are thanks to all the “chalequeo,” the food, the culture and more. You know if you are from Venezuela if….

1. Your driving skills are amazing!

After skipping wholes on the road, driving with no stop signs, and the “yellow on the traffic light means speed up” theory, you can drive anywhere in the world!

2. No matter if you are in China, United States, Spain or Canada, you can’t bear the sound of a motorcycle coming your way.

3. Arepa is not just a random thing you eat for breakfast.

It is food made from heaven. You eat arepas with chicken and avocado salad, with cheese, shredded meat and more. Add a cold Malta to your meal and you are a true Venezuelan.

4. The only things that can come close to arepas are tequeños or empanadas.

(Thanks Budare Bistro for this mouth watering picture)

Maybe a Cachapa, or un Perro con Todo, and sometimes Pabellón. But that’s it.

5. And after a good lunch or dinner, you need something to calm your sweet tooth.

It’s hard to chose between Torontos, Pirulines, Sussy, a Tres Leches, Marquesa, Quesillo, Cocosete or Ovomaltina.

6. You leave your house three hours after the party is supposed to start.

And if you want to be there on time, someone will ask you “vas a freir tequeños?”.

7. You don’t understand street names and numbers.

Instead, you know that when you get off the highway you have to drive straight until you see the boulevard that is under construction. You go right and when you see the big Araguanei, you go left. You will have the option to keep going straight or up a hill, and you must go up the hill until you see the Central Madeirense, and you make a left right after it. You’ll see the big red building and you just ask the man in the front door to let you in.

(Disclaimer: do not follow these instructions because I have no idea where you are going to end up at.)

8. You are a true cheese lover, and you know what goes best with Telita, Guayanes, Paisa, Palmit, Queso de mano and more.

9. And you love to go to the cheese truck to get a pound of cheese to make empanadas that night.

10. You use phrases like “parame bola,” “carne de burro no es transparente,” “jeva” and more on a daily basis.

11. You know you are becoming your mom when you start saying, “más perdido que el hijo de Limbergh” or "no te dejes barrer los pies que luego no te casas."

12. And whenever you listen to “llevo tu luz y tu aroma…” you can’t help but smile.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
