Going to a southern school, it felt almost necessary to go through Greek recruitment. Everyone told me that it would change my life and I would make so many friends. I went through Rush Week and felt a little out of place. When I joined my sorority everyone else seemed to feel right at home except for me. I seemed to be the odd ball out. I found most of what we had to do frivolous and annoying.
Most people find it shocking that I am in a sorority. I get asked all the time why I'm in one. If you feel a little out of place in your sorority and do not know why then you might be what people like to call a GDI (God D**n Independent). This article can help you determine if you are. If you are anything like me then you will understand some of these points as well.
1. You didn't care about Rush Week.
During Rush, all of the girls, except for you, seemed to care so much about every little detail. You did not understand why everyone was so stressed about meeting some girls you have never met. You thought it was a bit over dramatic to cry when they did not get into the sorority they wanted to. You understood that if the sorority did not want you, then you did not want them.
2. Bid Day was not a big deal to you.
All during Rush, all of the other girls would talk about how excited they were for Bid Day and you did not see the reason why. During Bid Day, you were a little overwhelmed with all the tears from all of the other girls who got into their dream sorority or who didn't. You did not understand why all these girls you have never met before were so excited to meet you. You felt that Bid Day was really awkward. You were a little out of place when all the other girls on Bid Day seemed so excited to be in your sorority and you just do not get it.
3. Everything leading up to initiation seemed like a waste of time to you.
You did not understand why you had to memorize every little thing about you sorority before you can become a initiated member of the sorority. You asked the people teaching you the information if there will be a test and they say no, so you are not sure what the point is. You did not understand why you did not just become a full member when you joined.
4. Initiation freaked you out and did not make you feel closer to anyone.
Weeks leading up to the event, everyone was saying how you cannot talk about it and warning you all about all this weird stuff. You get freaked out and get the feeling as if you are joining a cult. Once initiated, you and your sisters all are supposed to open up to each other. You find it weird to open up and tell secrets to people that you do not know. Everyone is telling you that now you all share a sacred bond and that makes you a little uncomfortable.
5. Once a member you find that almost everything you have to do is tedious.
Going to chapter meetings, committee meetings, buying shirts, formal, etc., seems to be more of a burden to you than something fun. You would rather spend your time doing literally anything else. You are getting fined left and right and don't get why. Every time you see a friend in your sorority they have to update you on everything because you are never there.
6. All your friends wonder why you're in the sorority.
Your friends ask you a least once a week why in the world you are still in the sorority. Your friends seem to know more about Greek events than you do. When you go to parties or meet new people, they are always shocked when you say that you are in a sorority.
7. Despite everything...
You eventually make your little group of friends in your sorority that you wouldn't change for the world. You make new friends all the time in your sorority, and you always have someone to go get coffee, party or just hang out with.
