You Can Save The World

Ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

You Can Save The World
Huffington Post

When I was in high school, some dumb boy told me I couldn't save the world, so I should quit trying. I don't know if he was threatened by my positivity, my determination, my fervor for life or a combination of the three, but I'm glad I didn't listen.

Disclaimer: I'm no Mother Teresa, by any means. But, do you think she gave up because someone told her they didn't believe in her? Of course not. Did Martin Luther King, Jr. stop fighting because people opposed him? No. Did Amelia Earhart stay grounded when she was born to fly? Absolutely not. These are just a few examples of people who went on to do great things, to save the world, in their own way. They did it in spite of the negativity they faced.

Think about it. Mother Teresa spent her life to serving others in need. It takes such dedication to selflessly give and provide for others before your own self, yet she did every single day.

Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement. He was fearless for his cause, and he impacted so many lives. It takes a real hero to fight back in a world that tells you to give up.

Amelia Earhart was a pioneer. It took guts to leave the ground and fly in a world where few were allowed to soar. She was a role model for women everywhere who wanted their wings.

You see, when ordinary people are put in extraordinary circumstances with extraordinary ideas, big things can happen. The people I previously mentioned put their pants on just like you do. They were normal people, but they chose to act on their ideas with incredible force. Sure, they failed. They got discouraged. They wanted to give up, but they didn't. They stood for what they believed in, no matter the cost.

The thing is, saving the world doesn't mean strapping on a flowing cape and flying into the middle of danger to fight off evil. The people listed above were just like you and me. They were passionate, and they took a stand for what they believed in. Sometimes, it's simply fighting your own monsters off. You might be the only person you help that day, and that's perfectly fine. You might make someone smile today, and that could've been all it took to save their world. You don't know what they're dealing with, after all.

With that being said, I dare you to wake up every morning with the mentality that you're going to do great things. When your feet hit the floor, I want you to face the day with a ferocious desire to do good that day. Wake up, people, and go save the world. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
