Yes Moving Away Can Be Scary, but Don't Let That Stop You

Everyone should move away from where they grew up at least once in their life.

Make the move.

Everyone in their life should move at least once. Whether you’re moving out of your hometown for college, a job, or just for a change I think it’s an essential part of everyone’s life.

I’ve lived in Kansas City all my life and I always wondered what it would be like to live somewhere else. That’s part of the reason why I chose to go to college in Chicago. Over the three months that I’ve lived in the city, I’ve been able to see many different changes in my own life.

Moving away will help you become truly independent.

You never know true independence until you’re walking around your new home, discovering new things about the city, getting lost, finding your way back, and truly finding your place in this new chapter of your life. You’ll start to do more things alone and find yourself enjoying it. Of course, you’ll probably become homesick at one point. That’s part of the whole process. You’ll start to miss people and things back home, but you’ll learn how to become self-reliant and how to make things happen for yourself.

Being in this new place will also give you the opportunity to reinvent yourself. It’s the perfect chance to start fresh. Nobody knows you and you have the chance to basically build up a new identity. You have a blank canvas and you get to choose what goes on it. The biggest thing for me was not feeling like I was forced to talk with people who I had slowly drifted away from.

I was able to easily make connections with new people who made it easy to place my roots in my new home.

Another thing for me is always trying to and being able to step outside of my comfort zone; from meeting new people, going to new places, or even just trying out new forms of transportation around the city. Moving away is probably the most direct way to be pushed outside of your own little box. You’ll be able to learn new things about yourself and do things that you never thought you’d be able to.

You can truly expand your horizons by just moving away from where you’ve lived for most of your entire life. You will be exposed to many new changes and experiences all at once. It has, and hopefully will continue to be one of the best and most rewarding experiences.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
