We have all been guilty of placing blame on others rather than accepting it ourselves at one time or another. It seems "easier" to get someone else in trouble instead of yourself. Millennials like myself have found ourselves as unwilling scapegoats for the previous generations. It is a never ending cycle of one generation throwing shame at the next one. I for one, am tired of it. I would rather take the blame for something that I specifically did or not do, instead of being based on stereotypes. Just like not all Muslims are terrorists, not all millennials are lazy.
Some of the ridiculous shaming that gets thrown in a millennials' way include:
We are narcissistic.
We are lazy.
We are entitled.
We buy too much avocado toast. (Where the hell did that originate from anyway?)
We are not buying diamonds.
We still live with our parents.
We are unemployed or underemployed.
We do not commit.
We do not have children.
We cannot think for ourselves.
These are just a handful of the stereotypes that are thrown at us on a daily basis.
The repercussions Millennials are dealing with stem from mistakes made from the previous generation. The same generations that raised us are now blaming us for things that have gone wrong in the world today. It is not like we chose to be born when we were and inherit the disaster that our country is right now.
While there are some who fall into some of the stereotypes of the infamous millennial generation, that does not define every millennial in existence. I still live at home with my parents. It is not practical for me to move out, even if I was able to afford do so anyway.
The most recent memorable instance of millennial shaming came from the CEO of Buffalo Wild Wings, Sally Smith. Smith attributed her company's declining profits to millennials changing tastes and habits. Suddenly, preferring to eat at home becomes a bad thing. Fast-casual eateries are becoming increasingly popular because of the speed and convenience that they offer. We try to eat at home more often to save money and to also eat healthier.
