You hear the expression every year, and you'll be certain to hear it again as 2018 rolls around: "new year, new me." It's become cliche and laughable, but I think that it's actually a pretty great mindset. Realistically, you can't completely change into a better version of yourself overnight, but if you set goals for yourself and work to reach them -- there's no reason why New Year's Resolutions can't totally benefit you!
I've been making them every year for as long as I can remember and have found that ever since 2014, I have been successful in completing at least 90% of my list. I keep my goals logged on my phone and keep them in mind as the year goes on, motivating me to make the changes I decided to make before the year ends. Every person's New Year's Resolutions are personalized to themselves, but here are five common ideas and why they should still be added to your list!
1. Get more sleep.
Especially as a college student, getting enough sleep is essential. All-nighters and running on your coffee cup may seem like a good idea in theory, but actually, carry real consequences in reality. Not getting enough sleep can lead you to not do as well as you hoped and starting a domino-effect of troubles you encounter as you attempt to be successful with one eye open.
2. Handle your finances better.
One of the worst feelings is when you find a purchase worth making -- whether it be a mini vacation with your friends or a dinner date with someone you like -- and finding that the only thing standing in your way is your empty wallet. Learning basic economic values and doing things such as consistently putting money from your paycheck aside and learning the art of couponing are habits that go a long way in making your paycheck more worthwhile.
3. Go on more adventures.
Maybe you'll go to your favorite artist's concert or simply start saying "yes" instead of listening too much to your doubts. I went all of 2016 using Tina Fey's quote, "Say yes and you'll figure it out afterward," and it sincerely changed my life. Believing that it was okay if I didn't feel ready because most successful people don't when they start anyway, helped push me to change my life for the better.
4. Be more organized.
If you're already the most organized person then this idea isn't really for you, but with our lives constantly changing every day as college students, organization is extremely important in keeping up with everything. If you keep your surroundings organized, then you will feel less overwhelmed and happier. Personally, my iPhone calendar is my lifesaver.
5. Be healthier.
I'm not talking about weight, although if that's a health issue for you then I highly recommend you speak to your doctor and follow their advice to help you reach a healthy lifestyle. But what you eat and how you workout are not the only parts of being healthier. Taking care of yourself mentally is important too. Reading more, breathing deeper and laughing often are other important self-care tactics that are worth strengthening. Being kind to yourself is a project worth working on and can impact your life tremendously. And if the end of 2017 has taught us anything -- hydration is key.
I hope you all have a healthy, happy, and wonderful new year. I hope you apply for that internship you think you won't get, reach that goal you thought was too impossible, and smile more than you thought you would. You all deserve it Xx.
