Every year, we pledge to accomplish something that has been on our to-do list for a while. And whether it’s losing weight, breaking a bad habit, or volunteering more, we usually fall short within a few weeks. Instead of committing to a larger, more difficult goal this year, here are some New Year’s Resolutions that you can actually stick with and accomplish in 2017.
Meet new people
Try to talk to people in your classes that you normally wouldn’t, challenge yourself to keep up with old acquaintances, and push yourself to meet new friends.
Give more compliments
Instead of keeping nice thoughts to yourself, make an effort to share them more frequently. Even if it’s as simple as complimenting someone’s shoes, you have the power to easily make someone’s day and come out of it feeling a little happier yourself.
As opposed to setting a goal of reading one book a week, just attempt to read more often than you previously did. Carry a book around with you for when you have time between classes or during a lunch break so it doesn’t have to be something you make time for.
Spend more time with the people you love
Whether it’s a significant other, friends, or family, make an effort to see them more. It can be as simple as watching a movie together or the occasional dinner, but make sure to keep up with those who are important to you.
Save more money
This one doesn’t have to be as involved as it may seem. You don’t have to try to limit your purchases or make a budget. Set a rule for yourself like don’t spend your 5 dollar bills. Any time you get change or cash back, put your 5 dollar bills somewhere other than your wallet and by the end of the year you’ll have some extra cash laying around!
Try new foods
It can be as simple as just trying one new thing a week. Incorporate a new ingredient into a recipe you love or try a whole new dish altogether! This way you can expand your culinary horizons and discover new foods you just might love.
Be more self-reliant
Learn to use a new tool, try to problem solve before asking for help, or just experience new things on your own. There’s nothing like learning to be more independent, and there’s no better time to do it than now!
Spend less time on your phone or laptop
Set aside an hour a day to just relax without your laptop or phone in hand. Try making dinner without checking for notifications or turn your phone off while you are with friends. You don’t have to avoid them entirely, just practice taking time away from them on occasion.
Face your fears
Make an effort to step out of your comfort zone more often. It doesn’t matter if it’s as simple as doing something that normally makes you anxious or trying to kill spiders that you are horribly afraid of, just try to overcome a particular fear over time!
Making a New Year’s Resolution doesn’t have to be overwhelming and work-intensive. Just put a little effort into a smaller goal and try your best to stick with it.
