Valentine's Day is an annoying holiday for me, or at least it was. That's changed for me as of late. This piece will venture to detail how that happened.
As long as I can remember, Valentine's Day has been a forgettable event for me. The cheesy movies, the saccharine Hallmark cards, and the vomit-inducing happy couples; all melded together to make me hate the "special day."
You could say I was shy around girls. Really, I was shy (some may say anti-social) in general. The only reason I even received a Valentine when I was younger was because our teachers made us send them every year. Sort of misses the point of the holiday, I think...anyway, without that, I wouldn't have received anything. As I got older, I wanted to have a relationship of sorts, but I was just too shy to make it happen.
I ended up just ignoring the whole thing. Valentine's Day? What Valentine's Day? I did meet someone eventually, but something still wasn't there. That has since changed.
I met someone in August of 2015 who completely changed how I feel. People say you'll just "click" with the right person. I used to think that was a load of crap, but now, I'm a believer.
It just feels right with her. We have so much in common, like our politics, and twisted sense of humor. It's more than that, though. She really loves me. Not because I'm convenient or because there's no one else at the moment. She loves me *for me* and that is a wonderful feeling. (How would you know that, Matthew?) Believe me, when it's you, you'll know.
So for this year, I looked forward to Valentine's Day, because now I have someone I want to enjoy it with.
Here's to hoping you find your missing puzzle piece, your other half, "the one." Believe me, it's a wonderful thing.
For Kathryn, my funny Valentine <3
