Valentine's Day is a holiday that the majority of people who are not in relationships dread. People view it as a day made only for those who have a significant other, a day to make you feel extra single. But the truth is, Valentine's Day isn’t a day to feel lonely, but a day to feel surrounded by love. When you look at Valentine's Day like that, you can see that it really isn’t so bad.
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love, not just the romantic kind. There are so many forms of love whether it be from your parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, pets … the list goes on. The main point is that love is all around us. Valentine's Day is a reminder that we have so many different types of loving relationships to be grateful for, and they should not be overlooked.
When you remember all the awesome people that surround you, there is no reason to be sitting alone in your room feeling sorry for yourself. Valentine’s Day is one of the best times to do something fun or exciting with your friends because, at the end of the day, they’re the only valentines you need. Dress it up, dress it down, go to a classy dinner and eat chocolate fondue, or stay in with Papa John’s and have a dance party to Taylor Swift. Whatever it is, do it knowing you’re surrounded by some cool friends.
Another reason Valentine's Day rocks is it’s a great excuse to buy all the chocolate, baked goods and candy you want. For just this weekend, it’s totally socially acceptable to walk out of Target with nothing in your grocery bags but boxes of cupcakes and bags of Ghirardelli squares. If you have a sweet tooth, Valentine's Day should be one of your favorite days of the year, take advantage of it.
Another thing that’s socially acceptable around Valentine's Day, is to shamelessly roll out to see movies like 50 Shades of Grey, and fawn over a fictional character. Why not fill your love life for the night with a set of on-screen abs? Or if that’s not your style, a marathon of Nicholas Sparks usually does the trick. Looking at Ryan Gosling or Channing Tatum can cheer up pretty much any seemingly gloomy day.
One more beautiful reason to celebrate instead of despise Valentine's Day — hope. Hope that romanticism is not dead. With bouquets of red roses filling rooms, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate delivered and grand gestures performed over candle-lit dinners, this day reminds us of the love we are all capable of showing. Even if you aren’t partaking in the romantic side of Valentine's Day, anyone with a heart can be warmed by witnessing acts of love and seeing living proof that love really is all around us.
Oh … and did I mention chocolate?
