Where is your focus?
Have you ever thought about what the word focus really means? Focus is the state or quality of having or producing clear visuals of something or someone. When your eyes are not focused on the Lord, nothing seems clear and you cannot get a clear visual of what is lying ahead. For example, have you ever driven in the rain and your windshield wipers stopped working? This is a clear example of how when you are not focused on His face nothing seems evident and you end up stopping and losing track of where you are supposed to be headed. If we would just replace the wipers, then we would be able to see the road ahead and what is coming our way.
There are things in your life that will either turn your focus to God, or away from God. Here are just a few examples:
- Friendships - Many friendships start out great and you get so excited because you finally have some friends that you “think” are encouraging and good influences. I know in my personal life, when I became friends with certain people that I thought were incredible, it went downhill quickly. My focus started to slowly slip away from God’s plans and to the plans that my friends had already made for me. Now, not all friendships are bad. There are also good friendships that can lift you up, and help reveal God’s face in such a new and beautiful way. After I let all those bad friendships go and began new ones with people that focus on the Lord that is when he started moving in my life.
- Boys/Girls – I can say a lot about this one… I was in a very serious relationship and when it ended, I found out where my heart, mind and eyes were focused. In any type of relationship, this can easily happen because you invest SO much time into one another. Do not get me wrong, I love relationships and all of that lovey dovey stuff, but when you cannot go one minute without thinking about them, then that becomes a problem. Just imagine if our thoughts were consumed with the Lord, like they are about the person we are dating or even people we love. He should be the focus of any type of relationship that we are in, and then things will go as planned.
- Family – Yes.. Family can defiantly get in the way and make us lose track of where our eyes should be focused. I know what you are thinking, “No no, my family would never distract me from God”. They would not do that intentionally, but sometimes things happen within the family and the focus shifts on the problem and what to do, instead of shifting your eyes on the “problem solver”. God wants us to place any burden on Him that we face. This is the beauty of it all, God can mold your family and grow each of you closer if you just uplift his name and focus on the greater picture He has coming for you. I know for me when I have my own family, I want God to consume us and when trials come our focus goes straight to Him, because the things we will face do not come as a shock to Him.
These are just a few things that have made me lose my focus and that have consumed my thoughts. If we would just place these things in the mighty Savior's hands and not lose sight of who He truly is, He would move in such a mighty way. With all this said, my prayer for you is that from here on out, everything that is thrown at you would shift your focus on Him and what He has planned for the road ahead of you.
