Being able to grow as a musician from elementary school to college has made me into the person that I am today. Along with creating lasting friendships and countless memories, my involvement in music has taught me life lessons that I will remember for years to come.

1. When you work as a team, you will achieve great things.

Teamwork is one of the most important aspects of band. As I continue throughout college, I know that I will experience working with a team at my job, for a group project, and eventually as a professional. Through learning about teamwork, my interpersonal communication skills have further developed.

2. Trust yourself and have confidence in your abilities.

This can be one of the hardest things to do in life. Having confidence in your own abilities can be present in every aspect of our lives. In band, I have learned to trust myself while playing a piece of music. Learning how to have confidence in myself has been useful in taking college finals and in doing presentations as a student and professional.

3. Be true to yourself because people will appreciate you for who you really are.

Band has taught me that when you reveal your true, authentic self to people, they will love you for who you are. Learning this has helped me realize that I do not need to pretend to be someone else in order to create friendships.

4. Approach challenges with the mindset that you can conquer them.

I will admit that I have thought about giving up on a piece of music because I deemed it as being too difficult for me. However, when I changed my mindset and played the piece line by line at my own pace, I was able to become better. Challenges are present in our lives, but we have the power to decide how to approach them.

5. Some days will be good, while others will be bad. That is okay.

Every day will not be flawless or perfect, and that is okay. Some days, I knew I didn't feel like myself, and it impacted my playing. But, by remaining positive and knowing that the bad days will pass, I was able to recognize that the good days were on their way.

6. Express yourself through what you love to do.

Music has become a form of self-expression for me. Through the notes on the pages, I am able to express emotion. Whatever it is that brings you peace, do it. Do not be afraid to express who you are through your hobby or passion.

7. Create relationships with others; you never know what unlikely friendships you will make.

Friendships can happen in a moment. Take the steps to get to know others, and you may create some of the best friendships that last for years. You never know what could happen by creating these relationships.

8. Practice, practice, practice!

In any aspect of our lives, practice is important. Band has taught me that practicing is a key to success. As a college student, I have utilized this in preparing for tests, public speaking, and even at my job. Practice surely does help with mastering a skill or activity.

9. Your hard work will pay off.

I have always known that I need to work hard for things in my life. Hard work can be exhausting and tiring, and we may question if it's all really worth it in the end. Band has shown me how months of hard work can pay off, and I will never think differently. I know that my hard work will result in something that I have been hoping for and working towards.

10. Celebrate the successes and the victories.

Life will not always be full of success, but when you are victorious at even something that may be considered "small" to others, it is worthy of celebration. The victories that we experience in our personal and professional lives should not go unnoticed by us. Celebrate what you have achieved because you worked hard to get there!

Being part of a musical group has taught me about life and has changed my perspective on certain aspects of college. As I continue my journey as a musician, I am eager to see the new, positive ways that music will impact my life.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
