A Letter to 2016

It's time for you to end.

A Letter to 2016
Her Campus

Dear 2016,

With only three months left of your reign, I deemed it necessary to write you a letter about how much has happened in your year. So much racism, hate, bigotry, profiling, war, murder, and just utter chaos has happened and I know every year people say the year they're in has been the worst year yet but 2016, you really take the cake on that one and here's why;

In the year 2016, there has been up to date, 353 mass shootings. In your year, 2016, The Orlando shooting happened on June 12th, 2016 and has been labeled "the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter, the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history, and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since the September 11 attacks in 2001" occurred and left the nation at an awe that someone could target a whole community of people. Do you know that some people can still hear the laughter of the assailant, Omar Mateen? Did you also know that only two days prior to this terrible event, singer and actress Christina Grimmie was shot and killed in Orlando, FL as well? I guess you don't believe in giving people time to grief and heal their already broken hearts.

But wait 2016, there's so much more to "thank you" for;

Within your year, 707 people have been killed by police in the United States...173 of those people were African-American. Even though your number is smaller than what it was in 2015, you're moving at what seems to be a very fast pace to beat it. The amount of riots that have happened because of the almost targeted police brutality has left this nation more divided than ever. Tear-gas, bulletproof vests, sit-downs, marches, it sounds like we're back in the time of the Civil Right's Movement! Black people's lives have been nothing but threatened in your year. It's no longer safe for a black child to play outside, for a man to sell CD's, or for a man to be in his girlfriend's car! I guess the police policy in your year was, "shoot dead, and ask no questions." We as black people don't want the riots, we don't want the violence but that seem's like the only way to get our voices heard in this time. It's a constant struggle to find some peace within our lives because we know that if we step outside to leave our house, who says we'll make it back that night? To our parents, grandparents, children, siblings, husbands, and wives? It's all a game of chance here in 2016.

Now onto the joke that is the presidential election.

You know, in 2016, history was made when we had the first woman become a presidential candidate. Hilary Rodman Clinton somehow beat Bernie Sanders as the representation of the Democratic Party. Even though this was something to be celebrated it quickly turned into a hateful thing filled with bashings, FBI investigations, and Hilary fighting harder and harder to prove her worth. I for one may not agree with everything Hilary says, but at least she's not out there spewing hate and bigotry into the ears of the voters like the Republican candidate, Donald John Trump is. Donald Trump has based his campaign on an attitude that is racist, sexist, violent, dangerous, and down right stupid. Donald Trump has said time and time again he wants to ban Muslims from coming into the United States and he wants to build a wall to keep the Mexicans out. First off, Muslims are a follower of the religion of Islam just like Catholics with Catholicism, and Christians with Christianity. Blacks, Whites, and even some Asian people are Muslim so what are you going to do Trump? Ban everyone who doesn't want to pray to Jesus? Because of Trumps bigoted speeches, Muslims all in the United States have been targeted for heinous and vicious crimes. It seems that in 2016, the people have become more ignorant to different cultures other than that of White European. People have forgotten that this nation that they love to "support" was built on the same damn immigrants Donald Trump is trying to keep out. I bet white people wouldn't feel so great getting burned just because they're wearing a cross around their neck. What about the women wearing hijabs or the men in their turbans who are labeled as a terrorist as soon as one of you ignorant Americans see them walk along the street? If you knew anything about Islamic beliefs, you would know that in the Qur'an, it's completely against everything that terrorist and radical groups like ISIS are about. If anything, Muslims are the most about peace within their religion, that's what it's so important for people to stop labeling terrorist attacks being lead by "Radical Islam Groups" you can't put the word radical and Islam together because they're beliefs are not the same. Just because a couple of terrorist might say they're doing everything they do in the name of Allah doesn't mean it's true. Donald Trump constantly claims he wants to make "America Great Again" and how exactly has he even gotten close to accomplishing this? All he's done is turned America into a reflection of Nazi Germany.

2016, hopefully with the last three months you have, you redeem yourself and somehow bring a more peaceful environment. Bring a world where gender equality isn't just a joke for some people, a place where we become color blind and just see each other as human beings, stop labeling a person as a terrorist just because of the way they dress and who they pray to, and to just live in a world where every time I turn on the news or look at my laptop, I don't need to hear another ignorant thing Donald Trump is saying and see people actually agreeing with him. #staywoke

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
