Writer of the Week: Cassy Silveri
Charlotte Durr

This weeks writer of the week is one of my favorite people, Cassy Silveri. Cassy is an absolute sweetheart and is friends with everyone, literally everyone. She always has a smile on her face and makes you feel like you can just be you. Cassy is a freshman at Misericordia and is working towards getting a degree in Mathematics. She is involved in what seems like everything from peer tutors, to being co-President of the Active Minds chapter, to her clubs such as Teachers Education club and Math club, to working and volunteering on campus. Her hometown is Plains, PA where she enjoys reading, writing, and baking. Since I already know Cassy I only learned a few new things about her, but it is still a pleasure to have interviewed her.

Charlotte Durr: Why did you start writing for the Odyssey?

Cassy Silveri: English is my worst subject so I never thought that I would find joy in writing. The Odyssey allowed me to be creative with my writing and express myself to a different audience. It provides opportunities to speak to others my age and connect with them on a platform that allows you to speak your mind.

C.D.: What is the best article you have written? Why?

C.S.: The best article I have written has to have been my Coughlin or A Birthday Letter to My Pop. The Coughlin one was one of my favorites because it allowed me to say what other people needed to hear and it received a lot of positive feedback. My letter to my Pop was also my favorite because it was incredibly personal and allowed me to express my emotions through writing that others may be able to connect to.

C.D.: Who’s your inspiration whether it be for career or just in general?

C.S.: I kinda love my dad, if that counts. I don’t know hes just like a really good person in general. He’s kind and always does the right thing for everyone because that’s what’s right and just. He’s just the kind of person I hope to be when I grow up, maybe minus the temper but I think I already got that from him.

C.D.: Favorite Class? Why?

C.S.: My favorite class was Calculus One because it allowed me to discover my passion for math. It has led me to my career path, not only towards mathematics, but towards teaching and helping others.

C.D.: Favorite thing about Misericordia? Why?

C.S.: My favorite thing about Misericordia is the people. Misericordia contains a community of open people that provides a friendly environment. When you are walking through the halls people will always say hello or hold a door open for you. It leaves with an impression of people being kind to one another even if you don’t know them.

C.D.: Favorite food at Misericordia?

C.S.: Pierogies and breakfast sandwiches.

C.D.: You Choose: favorite book and author or favorite movie and actor/actress.

C.S.: Favorite movie: Lilo and Stitch Favorite actress: Blake Lively

C.D.: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

C.S.: London! I hope to study abroad in London if my mother ever considers it. Just because I feel like it’s safer than most places because they still speak English, and the culture I would say is arguably similar to the US where Paris and Jamaica’s is not. Also I think it would be a great opportunity at a great price for me because I plan to be a teacher and would like to see how other classes are conducted in different countries. But yeah London because it has everything.

C.D.: If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?

C.S.: I’d probably wish that my entire family are financially stable for the rest of their life because I know that’s one big thing that always makes the world go on it’s side. I’d wish no one would ever be mean or discriminatory to anyone, myself included in that, I guess that’s like a low key world peace, and probably an endless supply of makeup!

C.D.: Plans for the future? Where do you see yourself in ten years?

C.S.: I want to stay fairly local forever because I’m a family girl. I plan to teach math at a nice little high school somewhere and maybe get my degree to become a guidance counselor, but we’ll see. The future is untold after all.

C.D.: Any advice for other writers out there?

C.S.: I stink at writing. I’m horrible at punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphing, everything, but I feel like I get better every time I write, so that would be my advice. Keep writing because hopefully practice will make perfect.

C.D.: Advice for younger people just starting college?

C.S.: Find people who like you. Like really like you and who you don’t have to be fake with. I had to pretend and not fully be myself throughout my entire 4 years of high school and then I got to college where people actually respect me and love my personality and it was fantastic. I love my friends and I’m so blessed I found them early on.

C.D.: Fun fact about you?

C.S.: I’m double jointed so I can bend my fingers all the way back to my hand.

C.D.: Lastly, if you could have one superpower what would it be and why?

C.S.: To read everyone’s mind because I’d love to know what goes on in quiet peoples mind and also my dog. I always want to know what she is thinking. OH! Or teleportation, because I mean then I’d be able to go to London like right now.

Cassy I love you, you are literally amazing. It was great spending time with you this week and getting to know a little bit more about you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
