Write Your Own Story
Stephanie Baker

Everyone is a writer.

Every person in existence is both the author and protagonist of the story of their life.

Some of the best life advice has come in the form of learning about being a writer.

Struggles make for great character development. Coal under pressure becomes a diamond.

Plot twists happen. Any good story has at least one. Learn from them. They don't necessarily have to be bad.

Make a decision. If you never make a decision, you will never really go anywhere. It can be absolutely terrify sometimes, but sometimes you just have to choose something and go with it.

The best way to beat writer's block is to write something, anything. If you are tired of the way life is and desperately seek a change, make one. Do something. Start writing your story. Just start.

Don't be afraid of copy editing. Friends make life better. Surround yourself with people who have good judgement. If you need to change something, they can help. Revision is the first step to realistic perfection. Life has necessary endings. If something is standing in the way of the life you want, make a revision.

Be the author. Your story doesn't need a ghostwriter. Don't let someone else make the decisions you need to make. If your story is not the one you want to be writing change it. Don't live a certain way, just to please someone else.

Why do we find ourselves so concerned with what's going to, or could possibly happen in our Chapter 12's, that we lose sight of living out our Chapter three's? Our fears and hopes for the future overtake what we are currently writing. Planning is great, fantastic even. Obsessing over future is not. Someday those futures will become our presents and when we will be concerned with an even farther away future. We are asked constantly starting in childhood what we want to be when we grow up. At some point, we need to realize that who we are today is just important as who we will be five years from now. Focus on the moment. This present. This word, this sentence, this paragraph.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
