On June 25th, the day before the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage equality, Catholicvote.org released a video titled "Not Alone" that is essentially a coming out video, except the people in the ad are coming out as anti-gay. The irony here is almost too much. They confess they have something to say that they are no longer afraid to share, which is they believe marriage is only between a man and a woman. It appears as if Catholicvote.org is under the impression that telling the world they are against same-sex marriage is on the same level as a coming out video. One girl even makes the statement, "I've tried to change this before, but it's too important to me." Another guy in the video implies: "Oh no, I don't fear gay people! I have plenty of gay friends, I just don't believe they should have equal rights."
Many members of the LGBT community fired back in the comments, making the very important point that it is both sad and ignorant for the people associated with the video to portray themselves as victims. It ignores the fact that coming out is an extremely difficult time for many LGBT members and LGBT people are victims of awful crimes and discrimination just for being gay.
YouTuber Michael Rizzi made the statement, "To the people who are stuck in the past: please do not ever think that your struggle for believing in inequality surpasses my struggle, or anybody else's struggle, living with those inequalities." In the video, Catholic Vote states, "Where can you say 'No, I'm not gonna be a part of this' but still respect someone?" One commenter summed it up perfectly, writing, "Easy, you marry who you want. That's you being a part of marriage as you see. The respect part comes in where you don't try to stop other people from marrying who they want. Pretty simple, right?" Watch the video to see the bigotry for yourself, and don't worry, according to them, you are "not alone" in your need to oppress others for who they are!
Luckily, some awesome people saw this video and decided to create an alternative version, and it is the best parody ever.
As their hilariously accurate alternate version states, "You are not alone. We're all in this together in the fight to turn back time, make less progress, and yet still pretend like we're the ones being attacked." Can I get an amen.
